College football transfer portal tracker: Latest entries, player rankings, biggest transactions for 2026

College football's first condensed 15-day winter transfer portal window came to an end at 11:59 p.m. Friday night, closing the door on new entries -- not on movement itself. As of Thursday afternoon, more than 3,200 FBS scholarship players had entered.

Miami and Indiana, the national title contenders, will see their players exercise their portal options next week; players will have a five-day window to do so. Meanwhile, do not be surprised to see players from any other school trickle into the portal the next few days, especially the first two business days of the next week. Players had until that 11:59 p.m. Friday deadline to communicate to their schools an intent to enter, but those compliance offices have 48 hours (in business days) to make those moves official.

All the while, the deadline simply closes the door on who can enter next -- not on where players already in the portal will land. Several top players are still on the board, including a highly-ranked QB who may just be what Miami has been waiting for

The new winter window, combined with the elimination of the spring portal and revised rules tied to coaching changes was designed to streamline the process. Instead, it shifted the timeline. Entry is now more compressed, while the recruiting, evaluations and commitments will continue well beyond tonight.

Visits remain ongoing, conversations are still happening and roster spots are still being filled. The deadline simply closes the door on who can enter next -- not on where players already in the portal will land.

Duke star QB Darian Mensah plans to enter transfer portal hours before deadline

Duke star quarterback Darian Mensah plans to enter the transfer portal, multiple sources told CBS Sports. Mensah is one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the country after signing a multiyear deal last offseason that pays him $4 million annually, according to sources.

His name has surfaced repeatedly this cycle as a potentially movable quarterback in conversations with industry sources, and that chatter only intensified in the closing hours of the 2026 portal window as quarterback-needy programs look to add a proven passer.

What to know as the transfer portal closes Friday night

The college football transfer portal window closes at 11:59 p.m. Friday night, and while the deadline matters, it doesn't mean roster movement suddenly stops. Here's a quick guide to what actually changes -- and what doesn't -- once the clock hits midnight.

What the deadline actually means

The portal closing only affects entry. Players who submit their paperwork before 11:59 p.m. local time are officially in the portal. Once that notification is filed, the school's compliance office has up to two business days to process and enter the player's name into the system.

Players who do not submit their paperwork by the deadline generally will have to wait until the next transfer window to enter -- unless they qualify for a specific exception. Reminder, there is no spring portal window like recent years.

Players already in the portal aren't going anywhere

If a player entered the portal before the deadline, they remain there until they either sign to a new school or withdraw their name. The window closing does not remove them, lock them into a decision or impose a signing deadline.

Those players are still free to communicate with coaches, take visits and make a decision on their own timeline.

Recruiting continues after tonight

Portal recruiting does not stop when the window closes. Coaches can still evaluate, recruit, host visits and sign players who are already in the portal. While there was a recruiting dead period earlier this week, the current contact period runs through Jan. 31, followed by a one-day quiet period on Feb. 1 and a month-long dead period in February.

Postseason and coaching-change exceptions still apply

Players on Indiana or Miami, who are still competing in the College Football Playoff National Championship, receive a short postseason extension and have until Jan. 24 to enter the portal. Head coaching changes can also open additional windows. Beginning five days after a new hire is announced, players have a 15-day window to enter their names.

College football transfer portal's best fits for each position group in 2026 cycle

College football's 2026 transfer portal cycle has been unlike any other, compressed into a 15-day window that kicked off the new year and accelerated roster movement across the sport. While the deadline for entry paperwork arrives at 11:59 p.m. local time Friday night, the ripple effects from this portal sprint may not fully settle until late January as visits, evaluations and final decisions continue to play out.

As of Thursday afternoon, more than 3,200 FBS scholarship players had entered the portal, with just over 32 hours remaining before the window closes at the time. Under those constraints, programs were forced to move quickly -- not just to add talent, but to identify the right fits based on scheme, roster needs and long-term development.

Position‑by‑position price ranges amid a transfer portal market surge

The college football transfer portal will officially open Jan. 2 and with it should come a flurry of activity, big-money deals and roster transformations.

There is more pressure than ever this time around with the spring portal period disbanded in favor of a sole winter period that runs from Jan. 2 through Jan. 16. It's why this year's winter portal could resemble what we see with NFL free agency with many of the best options coming off the board quickly for big money deals.

There was a belief a year ago that with the passing of the House settlement and introduction of the College Sports Commission as an enforcement arm that last year may have been the Golden Age for big paydays. With a $20.5 million revenue share cap and a promise for stricter enforcement of NIL deals, the idea was that prices would come down this cycle as teams could no longer double dip between unlimited collective money and the rev share. For a variety of reasons, however, that hasn't proven to be the case.

In some cases, even, prices have doubled.
