True freshman Jared Goff wins starting quarterback job at Cal

True freshman Jared Goff has won the Cal starting quarterback job, first reported.

The school confirmed the news Friday afternoon.

Goff competed in fall camp with redshirt freshman Zach Kline, a recruit from the previous staff under Jeff Tedford. The Bears open the season Aug. 31 at home against Northwestern and also face Ohio State and Oregon in the first month of the season.

“We have had a fiercely-contested competition for our starting quarterback position,” first-year coach Sonny Dykes said in a statement. “It’s important to name a starter and give them the reps they need to be prepared to play. We feel that right now Jared Goff gives us the best chance to be successful as a team, but we are very fortunate to have three outstanding quarterbacks we feel we can be successful with.”

The third quarterback is junior Austin Hinder, also a recruit of Tedford, who was fired after going 3-9 last year.

The Bears feel Goff best suits Dykes' 'Bear Raid' offense that he honed at Louisiana Tech and has a chance to be special.
