Ty Montgomery not likely to play for Stanford this weekend
David Shaw said Montgomery, one of the team's leading receivers, isn't likely to face the Irish.
Stanford will likely be without one of its biggest playmakers when it makes the trip to South Bend to take on Notre Dame Saturday. Coach David Shaw told the media after practice Tuesday that receiver Ty Montgomery probably won't be taking the field this weekend.
"He's probably not going to play," Shaw said.
And that will probably be problematic for Stanford. Montgomery is second on the team in receptions with 18 for 168 yards. He'll be replaced by Jamal-Rashad Patterson, who has caught four passes for 100 yards this season.
Of course, though Stanford still has tight ends Zach Ertz and Levine Toilolo, teams that can stretch the field with receivers are likely to find more success against a Notre Dame defense that has proved incredibly tough against the run.
The Notre Dame defense is allowing only 3.47 yards per carry and hasn't given up a rushing touchdown through five games this season. In fact, the Notre Dame defense hasn't allowed a touchdown of any kind since the fourth quarter of its game against Purdue on Sept. 8.
However, during Notre Dame's 41-3 win over Miami last weekend, the Hurricanes showed what most suspected about the Notre Dame defense: its secondary can be beaten. And it was, but Miami receivers routinely dropped passes, including two would-be touchdowns.
So missing Montgomery will hurt Stanford in the passing game, as well as on special teams, where he's averaging 25.8 yards per kick return.
