UNC announces hires of Larry Porter, Keith Heckendorf
North Carolina officially announced the additions of Larry Porter as running backs coach and Keith Heckendorf as quarterbacks coach.
North Carolina officially announced two additions to its offensive staff late Monday night, bringing back Keith Heckendorf as quarterbacks coach and hiring Larry Porter as running backs coach.
Heckendorf, a player development assistant for the Tar Heels in 2013, was initially hired by Blake Anderson when the former UNC offensive coordinator was named Arkansas State's head coach in December.
"We are excited to bring Keith back to Chapel Hill," head coach Larry Fedora said in a school release. "He’s been a key member of this program since we got here and he already has a great knowledge of our system as well as familiarity with our personnel. He is another young, energetic coach who will be a great asset to our program both as a coach and as a recruiter."
Porter was the running backs coach at Arizona State in 2012 and Texas in 2013 after serving as Memphis' head coach in 2010 and 2011. He was the running backs coach for Les Miles at Oklahoma State and LSU, serving as assistant head coach during the Tigers' national title run in 2007-08.
"Larry is a coach who I’ve admired for a long time," Fedora said. "He has worked at some of the most successful programs in the country and has won at the highest level in our sport. Larry is not only an outstanding coach but he is a tireless recruiter who will help us continue to build a championship team in Chapel Hill."
During its investigation of the Oklahoma State football program, Sports Illustrated alleged that Porter and other Cowboys assistants were involved in improprieties that included providing money to players for meals. After the report was published, the University of Texas conducted its own investigation and found no wrongdoing on Porter's part.
