VIDEO: Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe gets dunked
Watch as Jacksonville State head coach Jack Crowe enters a dunking booth at practice and goes under thanks to quarterback Coty Blanchard.
Thursday, we showed you how the coaches at D-II Emporia State livened up a stale practice and beat the Kansas State--with a surprise team-wide water balloon battle.
Friday, it was 65-year-old Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe's turn to surprise his players with a little extracurricular practice fun. Instead of the team's planned workout, Crowe summoned them to an old-school carnival-style dunking booth outside the Gamecocks' stadium, where he gave team quarterbacks Marques Ivory and Coty Blanchard three attempts each to put him in the drink.
Did they succeed? The team's reaction (at the 45-second mark) says it all:
You might remember Crowe and Blanchard (a highly-regarded baseball prospect in the offseason, fresh off a stint in the Cape Cod Leaue) from the most notable game in the FCS Gamecocks' history, their 49-48 double-overtime upset of Ole Miss in their 2010 opener. The Eye on College Football team ranked that upset the ninth-biggest in college football since fellow FCS power Appalachian State took down Michigan to kick off the 2007 season.
Crowe will hope loosening up his team with the dunking booth stunt will put them in the right mindset for another shocker--the Gamecocks open the 2012 season next Saturday against Arkansas, the same school who famously fired Crowe for losing to FCS squad the Citadel the very next day. Beating Ole Miss was sweet, but for Crowe, upending the Razorbacks would be even sweeter.
Too bad for him the task should prove even tougher than beating the Rebels. While the Gamecocks are ranked No. 22 in the FCS, the Razorbacks are ranked No. 10 in the FBS.
