The quarterback competition at Virginia Tech has reached a conclsion, with Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer being named the starter for next Saturday against William & Mary.

Brewer was battling redshirt senior Mark Leal, a longtime backup for Logan Thomas, this past week for the job. Leal has received compliments from his coaches for improvement from spring practice to the fall, and offensive coordinator Scott Loeffler said both guys "would be needed" throughout the season.

Brenden Motley, Loeffler said, would be No. 3 on the depth chart.

"Both of the guys gave great effort and played very well in preseason, making it a very difficult choice," Frank Beamer said in a statement released by the school. "It was a very close race and we’re proud of both of them."

Beamer and the Hokies staff wanted to wait until reviewing Friday's scrimmage before making a final call on the quarterback race; which has been reportedly as close as the coaches indicated above. The health of running back Trey Edmunds and the role of the talented freshman backs pushing for time will likely remain an area of focus with a Week 2 matchup against Ohio State on the horizon.
