Virginia Tech RB Michael Holmes arrested on assault charges
Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes was charged with two counts of simple assault and malicious wounding, authorities told the Virginian-Pilot.
Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes was arrested on assault charges and is being held without bail, a jail spokesman confirmed to the Virginian-Pilot on Sunday.
Holmes was charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of malicious wounding, reportedly getting arrested just hours after the Hokies' spring game Saturday in Lane Stadium. The sophomore led all running backs in the Orange-White game with 24 yards on seven carries.
Virginia Tech has not released a statement regarding Holmes' status, but athletic department guidelines call for indefinite suspension until the charges are resolved or dropped.
Improving the running game has been a key concern for Virginia Tech heading into 2013. Holmes has been competing against sophomore J.C. Coleman and redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds for the starter's snaps at running back.
The Hokies are able to utilize quarterback Logan Thomas' versatility much more with a consistent rushing threat in the backfield. Thomas' completion percentage dropped from 59.8 in 2011, David Wilson's final year in Blacksburg, to 51.3 a year ago. With the top three pass catchers from last season gone, there is even more pressure on the running backs to be productive.
Holmes ran for 280 yards on 70 carries as a freshman in 2012, leading all running backs with four rushing touchdowns. He saw most of his action early in the season, taking a backseat after Coleman earned the starting job in October.
