Western Kentucky promotes OC Jeff Brohm to replace Bobby Petrino
Western Kentucky announces the official promotion of assistant head coach Jeff Brohm to head coach in order to replace Bobby Petrino.
Members of the Western Kentucky administration hinted that the search to replace Bobby Petrino would be fast, and the Hilltoppers were true to their word with the promotion of offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm.
Western Kentucky's offense led the Sun Belt in yards per play (6.29) and ranked No. 29 nationally in 2013, Brohm's first season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Hilltoppers. The unit broke 18 single-season school records including total offense, individual passing yards and individual rushing yards. The team finished 8-4, with a 4-3 record in Sun Belt play, but did not receive an invitation to play a bowl game.
Bobby Petrino was offered a chance to return to Louisville and he was introduced as the school's next head coach on Thursday. By Thursday afternoon, Brohm was reportedly interviewing for the promotion and considered by many to be the frontrunner. SB Nation's Steven Godfrey reported that Brohm's promotion has been part of a contingency plan put in place when Petrino was hired.
Brohm had been unofficially promised the job when he arrived as offensive coordinator, which was meant as a contingency against Petrino leaving. That move was made to help create system consistency on offense and bridge recruiting. WKU didn't figure Petrino would be around long, and those suspicions were warranted.
The former Louisville quarterback began his college coaching career began with the Cardinals under Bobby Petrino in 2003. He remained on staff, through the transition from Petrino to Steve Kragthorpe, until 2008 before joining Howard Schnellenberger at FAU and then short stints at Illinois and UAB. Brohm then rejoined Petrino at Western Kentucky, serving as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2013.
