Yahoo: Grant Delpit's NFL draft stock is falling
Grant Delpit may have to wait a little longer to get drafted...
With the 2020 college football season starting to wind down, we are getting a better idea of what the NFL Draft will look like in April. For som players, that means bad news as their draft stock starts to slide.
One of the players whose standing among NFL scouts has slowly slipped throughout the year has been LSU safety Grant Delpit. Coming into the season, Delpit was seen as a potential top 10 pick. Like LSU’s defense as a whole, there have been some concerns about Delpit’s game that have popped up throughout the year. The most notable of those issues is tackling.
In Yahoo Sports’ article on which players’ draft stock is rising and falling, Delpit winds up in the latter category due mostly to his high number of missed tackles. Eric Edholm of Yahoo points out that Pro Football Focus has calculated 19 missed tackles on the season for Delpit, which is the 10th most in the country. Against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Delpit missed four tackles. While he can make some great plays in coverage, Delpit just hasn’t been able to get opponents to the ground on a consistent basis. Because of that, Edholm compares Delpit to another safety who was recently take in the middle of the first round.
“In this regard, I view Delpit the same way I did former Indianapolis Colts first-rounder Malik Hooker coming out,” Edholm writes. “Hooker made some breathtaking plays in coverage, able to span half a field in the blink of an eye with great timing and instincts. They both share great size for the position, too, but there was a reason Hooker slipped to the No. 15 spot. Hooker has been a good player in the NFL when healthy, but his development hasn’t been as fast as some folks thought it might be. The good news is that his missed tackles aren’t as big a story as they once were.”
Of course, there is still time for Delpit to recoup his image in front of NFL scouts. LSU has two SEC games left, and then will most likely go to the SEC Championship Game, barring a collapse. Beyond that, the College Football Playoff is well within reach for the Tigers. Delpit, who has 50 tackles and an interception in 2019, can use those games to show NFL teams that he can make tackles under the brightest lights.
In his latest 2020 NFL mock draft, CBS Sports draft expert Ryan Wilson projects Delpit to join former former LSU players Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Greedy Williams in Cleveland with the No. 13 overall pick. That’s still not a bad spot to get drafted, but it’s not in the top 10, where Delpit was to start the football season.
