Chattanooga vs UCLA

UCLA had been without a 30-point scorer since 2010. Its last 4-0 start was 2007-08. And its last triple-double was in 1995.

The 22nd-ranked Bruins updated the record books in all three categories in their last game and set the bar high for Sunday's regional matchup in the Las Vegas Invitational against visiting Chattanooga.

Kyle Anderson had 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists while fellow sophomore Jordan Adams scored 30 points in UCLA's 81-70 victory Friday over Morehead State.

"The sky's the limit for both of us," said Adams, who has led the Bruins in scoring in all four games while averaging 22.3 points. "We're the captains, so with us going out there and putting up these numbers we have to bring it every night with the same intensity."

Anderson's triple-double was just the third on record in school history, though the assist did not become an official statistic until 1983-84. The 6-foot-9 swingman is averaging team highs of 9.8 rebounds and 8.0 assists.

The individual performances overshadowed the return of forward Travis Wear, who played his first game of the season after undergoing an appendectomy Oct. 28. He was true to form with 11 points after averaging 10.9 in 2012-13.

"It was like 100 mph," Wear said. "I got out there and I was kind of like a deer in the headlights. I kept trying to tell myself, slow down. I was excited to get out there."

Even with Wear, the Bruins are playing short-handed. Freshman Noah Allen underwent surgery to repair facial fractures suffered Nov. 12 against Oakland, and there's no timetable for his return. Wanaah Bail has yet to make his UCLA debut following knee surgery, but he could play at the end of the week during the Bruins' Las Vegas portion of the tournament.

Zach LaVine has stepped up off the bench. The freshman guard scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting Friday and has averaged 10.5 in his first four games.

The Bruins used a 20-2 first-half run to outpace Morehead State.

"Anytime you're on runs like that you get defensive stops," first-year UCLA coach Steve Alford said. "When this team gets defensive stops, we're very good in transition."

Alford's team allowed 70 points for the first time this season but held the Eagles to 37.1 percent from the field. The Bruins have yet to allow an opponent to shoot 40 percent, holding their first four foes to a collective 34.9 percent, and have won by an average of 20.7 points.

UCLA has never faced Chattanooga, which has shot 49.4 percent this season.

The Mocs (2-3) are coming off an 83-81 buzzer-beater loss to Nevada in Reno on Friday.

"We just have to stick to our plan and these games are going to come back to us," coach Will Wade told the team's official website. "These games will come back to us if we keep working and doing the right thing."

Forward Z. Mason led the Mocs with 24 points and eight rebounds.

"We can't hang our heads," Mason said. "This is a quick turnaround to us playing UCLA. We just have to learn from this loss and get ready for our big game."

Chattanooga has dropped its last 22 games against ranked opponents.

The Bruins travel to Las Vegas to continue tournament play against Nevada and Northwestern on Thursday and Friday.
