LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Quinn McDowell hit a jumper with 8 seconds left, was fouled and completed a three-point play as William & Mary earned its first victory of the season, 65-64 over Liberty on Sunday.
McDowell, a senior swingman, finished with 18 points for the Tribe (1-5) in a 2K Sports Classic subregional game. Brandon Britt scored 15.
William & Mary led most of the second half, but never by more than seven points.
The Flames (2-4) had a chance to win when John Caleb Sanders was fouled with 1 second left, but he missed both free throws.
Liberty went ahead 60-59 on a 3-pointer by Jesse Sanders with 2:29 remaining, and his layup made it 62-59 at the 1:48 mark.
A 3-pointer by McDowell tied it before David Minaya put Liberty ahead 64-62 with 22 seconds left.
Tavares Speaks scored 13 points for Liberty. Minaya and John Caleb Sanders had 12 each.
