Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs Iowa

No. 25 Iowa easily defeats Arkansas-Pine Bluff

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa coach Fran McCaffery will find minutes for Josh Oglesby if he shoots like this.

Oglesby scored 13 points in his season debut and No. 25 Iowa rolled to an 85-61 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluffon Sunday.

Oglesby missed the first 12 games of the season with a broken foot. He made his first four 3-pointers during a 6-minute stretch in the first half-- drawing a loud ovation from the fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"It felt really good, especially just making my first shot so I could get into the groove of things," Oglesby said. "This team's so unselfish and they found me, and I knocked down some shots."

The Hawkeyes (11-2) opened their final non-conference game with a 39-5 run. Jarrod Uthoff scored 16 points and Adam Woodbury added 10.

Tevin Hammond scored 19 points for Pine Bluff (2-9), which lost its ninth straight.

Iowa committed a season-worst 27 turnovers but dominated the rebounding 42-27.

The Hawkeyes shot 62 percent from the field overall, compared to 33 percent for Pine Bluff.

Oglesby could become a much-needed outside shooting threat for the Hawkeyes, who rank near the bottom of the Big Ten in 3-pointers.

The junior struggled last season, making only 26.9 percent of his 3-point attempts after shooting an impressive 37.2 percent as a freshman.

It's unclear how Oglesby will fit into Iowa's already deep rotation. Ten Hawkeyes average at least 14 minutes a game. McCaffery now has five guards he's comfortable with as Iowa opens Big Ten play on Dec. 31 against Nebraska.

"I wasn't surprised," McCaffery said. "I was honest with you guys. I told you that he looked really good and he looks like he's in pretty good shape."

The Hawkeyes shot 75 percent from the field in taking a 52-15 halftime lead.

On one play late in the half, Woodbury fumbled his dribble on a fast break on what looked like a sure turnover. But the 7-foot-1 center recovered and wrapped a pass around his back to Aaron White for a dunk and foul.

"I tried to do it," Woodbury said with a laugh. "White doesn't think so, but his opinion doesn't matter."

Pine Bluff outscored the Hawkeyes 46-34 in the second half. McCaffery even pulled his third team off the court in the final minute because of frustration with the sloppy play.

Pine Bluff is in the middle a brutal 15-game stretch of road and neutral-site games to open its season. The Golden Lions' home opener is Jan. 18.

The travel hasn't been easy, either. The Golden Lions didn't arrive in Iowa City until 4 a.m. Sunday because of poor road conditions from Omaha, where they landed from Chicago.

A heavy snowstorm nearly doubled the 250-mile drive to 7 hours.

"We got a chance to bond a little bit more," Pine Bluff coach George Ivory said.

Sunday was the final game of official Ed Hightower's 36-year career.

Iowa held a moment of silence before the game for Pam Culver, the school's longtime basketball secretary who died Saturday.
