Quinnipiac vs Oregon State

Brandt leads Oregon State over Quinnipiac 76-68

  •

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Angus Brandt returned from an injury to score 21 points and lead Oregon State over Quinnipiac 76-68 on Sunday night.

Brandt hyper-extended his knee in the opening game of the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii on Dec. 22 and missed the next two games before starting on Sunday. He was listed in the Beavers media guide as a game-time decision. Last year, Brandt tore his ACL in November, ending his season.

Roberto Nelson added 17 points for the Beavers (8-4) and Hallice Cooke scored 12.

Ike Azotam had 17 points and five rebounds for Quinnipiac (6-5), while Umar Shannon made five 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. Ousmane Drame added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Bobcats.

A tip-in by Devon Collier at the 16:34 mark in the second half had the Beavers up 47-35, but Quinnipiac responded with a 15-0 run.

The Beavers didn't score for nearly five minutes, until a Challe Barton 3-pointer tied the game at 50 with 11:29 left.

That started a 12-1 Beavers run that ended with a flagrant 1 foul on Oregon State's Langston Morris-Walker for hitting Drame in the face with 7:05 remaining.

Shannon made both free throws for the Bobcats to make the score 59-53, but Drame didn't return until there was only 1:30 left.

Morris-Walker started for the first time for the Beavers at small forward, replacing the slumping Victor Robbins.

Eric Moreland, one of the best rebounders and shot blockers in school history, must sit out two more games because of a suspension for a violation of team rules. Coach Craig Robinson has not elaborated on the reason for the suspension.

Quinnipiac was up 13-8 at about five minutes into the game, but then went nearly five minutes without scoring while allowing the Beavers to take the lead.

Oregon State went up 39-29 after a 3-pointer by Nelson with 2:09 left, and that was the score at the half.

The Bobcats outrebounded the Beavers 43-36 to continue a streak in which Quinnipiac has not been outrebounded by an opponent in its last 43 games, by far the longest streak in the nation. Quinnipiac entered the contest averaging 17 offensive boards and outrebounding opponents by more than 13 per game.

Quinnipiac joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this year and had never played against a Pac-12 opponent before Sunday's game. The Bobcats next game is on Thursday versus Iona.

The Beavers open Pac-12 play on Thursday at Colorado.
