Bears report: Strategy and personnel

Finding any ray of hope following the game-day suspension the NCAA handed F Perry Jones is rather difficult. However, F Quincy Acy enjoyed a big night in the first-round loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament and will return next season as a senior. Acy had become a sixth man for the Bears, but seemed to respond to the start he received against Oklahoma with a passion, especially since he was replacing Jones.

Just about everything went against Baylor. After struggling to a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Big 12, which left them off the bubble going into the conference tournament, the suspension of Jones was devastating. The Bears will not even participate in the postseason after reaching the Elite Eight last year and actually playing eventual NCAA champion Duke close throughout much of that game. How well the Bears recover is interesting, though the suspension to Jones is not expected to impact any standing with the NCAA, which was rocky at best following violations committed previously under former coach Dave Bliss.

F Quincy Acy provides some athleticism underneath, which the Bears may tap to the fullest extent with him expected to play a key role as a senior. One of the bigger problems for the Bears was overcoming the loss of G Tweety Carter, a veteran point who directed the attack last season. G A.J. Walton had solid moments as Carter's replacement and even ranked second in the Big 12 with 4.8 assists on average, But the Bears rarely played with the same rhythm as last year, in some ways because Walton wasn't a scorer. C J'mison Morgan returns after cracking the starting lineup, though he needs to become more consistent while recognizing his value as a rebounder and defender.

--Senior G LaceDarius Dunn closed his career as the Big 12's all-time leading scorer with 2,285 career points. He scored 11 on 3-for-14 shooting in the Bears' first-round loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament.

--Freshman F Perry Jones, who was ruled ineligible by the NCAA the day of Baylor's first-round game in the Big 12 Tournament, scored in double figures in 26 of 30 games. Jones averaged 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds.

--Junior F Quincy Acy attempted to take over for the Bears in Jones' absence, generating 21 points and 15 rebounds in the Oklahoma defeat.
