MOBILE, Ala. (AP) Xavier Johnson rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, both career bests, and South Alabama became bowl eligible with a 35-28 win over New Mexico State on Saturday.

Johnson's 35-yard scoring run with 2:28 to play capped a 21-point fourth quarter for the Jaguars (6-6, 2-6 Sun Belt) for a 35-21 lead.

Conner Cramer and Johnathan Boone connected on a 35-yard score with 25 seconds left for the Aggies (3-9, 2-6).

Johnson scored on a 51-yard run on South Alabama's first possession and Larry Rose III, who ran for 170 yards, had a 30-yard score for the Aggies in the second.

Cramer, who ran for 110 yards, had a 41-yard scamper in the third quarter that tied the game at 14 before the teams combined for 35 points in the fourth quarter.

Rose's 1-yard plunge in the first minute of the fourth quarter put NMSU up. On South Alabama's next snap, Dallas Davis and Josh Magee hooked up for a 76-yard score before an 86-yard drive ended in Dami Ayoola's 2-yard run, putting the Jags up 28-21. Davis threw for 239 yards.
