Angels' Garrett Richards: Chooses platelet-rich plasma shot instead of Tommy John
Richards (elbow) has chosen not to undergo Tommy John surgery and instead will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.
Richards chose to treat his UCL tear via a non-surgical route and underwent a stem-cell injection Monday afternoon. While surgery is still on the table if the stem-cell treatment doesn't work out, this method could reduce the 27-year-old's shelf time to two months; Tommy John would effectively end his season.
