The Angels optioned Buttrey to their minor-league camp Sunday.

After accruing 11 saves and 34 holds across the past three seasons, Buttrey appeared in good shape to make the Opening Day roster as a high-leverage reliever for Anaheim. While he wasn't especially sharp this spring (3.86 ERA, 1.86 WHIP in seven innings), Buttrey's demotion still comes as a surprise. Offseason pickup Raisel Iglesias is locked in as the Angels' closer, but the bullpen looks quite unsettled after the top option.
