Cardinals' Jedd Gyorko: Will start at shortstop Opening Day
Gyorko will get the Opening Day nod at shortstop Sunday against the Pirates. He'll assume the eighth spot in the order.
Thanks to spring injuries to Jhonny Peralta (thumb) and Ruben Tejada (quadriceps), Gyorko finds himself atop the depth chart at shortstop to open the season, despite a less-than-stellar spring. Gyorko has shown the ability to bring plus-power from the middle infield in the past, but his poor contact rate has typically kept his batting average low. In addition, he doesn't profile as a great defensive option at shortstop, so he may need to get off to a hot start to the season offensively or risk losing playing time to Greg Garcia.
