Cubs' Addison Russell: Hopes to return this weekend

Russell (foot) said that he's game ready and "could be activated" this weekend against the Cardinals, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Russell took batting practice prior to Thursday's game, and he's been able to run around the bases pain-free a couple times already this week. The shortstop has felt good in recent days, and believes that he's on the verge of returning to the field, even if manager Joe Maddon elects to keep him on the bench until early next week. Upon his return, it's expected that Russell will require regular maintenance days to remain rested and healthy, while Javier Baez continues to fill in at shortstop in his place.
