Farrell was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.
Farrell was called on to make a spot start Monday against Arizona and failed to get the job done, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings. He could return to Chicago as a spot starter or long-relief man later in the season, though his 5.28 career ERA in 44.1 major-league innings gives little reason for optimism.
