Wick could have added competition for the closer role with the team adding Chris Martin on Tuesday, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
Wick only has 11 career saves in four seasons at the MLB level, so he's far from an established closer. Martin has mostly worked in a setup role himself, but he at least gives the Cubs another veteran option if Wick falters. The latter could help his cause with a strong start to the season. Wick posted a middling 4.30 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 23 innings in 2021, though he was able to rack up 29 strikeouts as well.
