The Cubs designated Wolters for assignment Wednesday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Chicago will swap Wolters off the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for P.J. Higgins, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. Even though he saw few opportunities behind No. 1 catcher Willson Contreras, Wolters struggled in his limited action with the Cubs. He posted a .401 OPS and struck out in 12 of his 30 plate appearances (40 K%).
