Bergman (1-1) racked up nine strikeouts over 7.1 scoreless innings in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Athletics, giving up two hits and two walks.

The 29-year-old right-hander reached the eighth inning for the first time in his career, while his strikeout total tied James Paxton for the most in a game by a Mariners pitcher this season. Bergman also took a no-hitter into the fifth, and the victory was his first since May of 2016 when he was a member of the Rockies. He also notched 14 swinging strikes, but that many missed bats is atypical; Bergman's career-high K/9 is 8.0, and he's been between 4.9 and 6.8 in his other three major-league campaigns. He'll look to generate a successful encore Tuesday in a road start versus the Nationals.
