The Mariners designated Overton for assignment Sunday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

After failing to impress in long relief during his nine appearances with the Mariners earlier this season, Overton was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma in late May. He wasn't able to find much success in the minors either, delivering a 9.86 ERA over his last five starts with Tacoma before the Mariners decided to drop him from the 40-man roster. if Overton isn't traded or goes unclaimed off waivers in the coming days, he'll likely stick around with Tacoma and provide some pitching depth.
