Overton was claimed off waivers by the Padres on Monday.

Overton spent much of the 2017 season shuttling between Triple-A and the majors, but the Mariners ultimately designated him for assignment after he found little success at either level. The Padres will take a chance on the right-hander, who managed to produce a solid 3.29 ERA in 125.2 innings as a starter at the Triple-A level last season. He'll likely continue to develop as a starter in the minors, although it wouldn't be too surprising to see him work his way to the big leagues once again, given the plethora of injuries plaguing San Diego at the moment.
