Cordero was optioned to minor league spring training Friday, John Schlegel of MLB.com reports.

Cordero was added to the Padres' 40-man roster this past offseason, but he struggled at the plate in his spring training debut (5-for-27). Despite the lack of hits, the 22-year-old displayed an ability to get on base (.343 on-base percentage) and chipped in a pair of steals. The athletic outfielder spent the majority of the 2016 season with High-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio, slashing .286/.339/.444 and .306/.356/.478 respectively. He should start the year with Triple-A El Paso and could see time with the major league club in September when rosters expand.
