Cashner (8-9) held Houston to a single run on three hits over eight innings Wednesday, striking out six without a walk en route to an 8-1 victory.
Mark this down as the best start of the year for Cashner -- not only is it the first time he's gone eight innings, but stunningly enough, those six whiffs represent a season high. Indeed, Cashner's 69:49 K:BB in 133.2 innings on the year is a deplorable figure; that strikeout rate is a career low by a mile and one of the worst marks in the league. Cashner's carrying respectable ratios with 3.30 ERA and 1.29 WHIP despite all that, but his 4.40 FIP and 5.21 xFIP tell the real story. Expect regression to strike him before the season's out.
