Romero's failure to intentionally walk Gary Sanchez in the eighth inning Saturday is earning him criticism from pitching coach Jim Hickey, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Romero faced Sanchez with runners on second and third and no one out and had specific instructions to intentionally walk the hot-hitting backstop, but instead threw a 52 mph lob near the plate. Sanchez took advantage and socked it into deep center for a sacrifice fly. Hickey labeled the mistake "inexplicable, unacceptable and just the kind of stuff that can't happen." Romero is having a rough September even beyond Saturday's hiccup, now sporting a 16.62 ERA over the 4.1 innings covering his six appearances.
