Velazquez allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Royals.

Velazquez performed admirably in a fill-in role for the injured Brian Johnson (shoulder). In the longest of his three MLB outings this season, Velazquez fired 55 strikes in just 77 pitches. It was an extremely efficient performance -- a necessity, as Velazquez has not been stretched out for a starter's workload. With Johnson out, Velazquez may have a few more chances to show off his stuff, and he should be able to go deeper by the game if this level of performance holds up.
