Thornburg (shoulder) will undergo surgery to treat his thoracic outlet syndrome Friday and will miss the remainder of the season, Ryan Hannable of reports.

It seemed like this entire season was one step forward, two steps back for the embattled right-hander, although it seems that the Red Sox finally pinpointed the problem holding Thornburg back. Although he's tabbed to miss the rest of the 2017 season, the Red Sox are confident that he'll be ready to go when the 2018 season comes along. How effective he'll be following the operation remains a mystery, however, as others who have undergone the same surgery (Josh Beckett, Matt Harvey) have not had great results after the fact.
