Time to take stock of whose value is rising, falling
Now that nearly a full month of the season has passed, it's no longer too early to start taking some extended slumps and streaks a little more seriously.
Just about any player can get hot or cold for a month, but as we enter the fifth week of the Fantasy season, some of the more extreme over- and under-performers deserve some serious attention.
One player who took a tumble in my rankings recently is Starling Marte. I have to admit that I get more impatient with slow starters of whom I was already suspicious, and Marte falls into that category. Both as a rookie and as a prospect, Marte's plate discipline left something to be desired, so I was surprised when he cut back on his strikeouts and hit .280 last season.
So far this year, Marte has been striking out at a dizzying rate -- 37 times in 105 at-bats -- and according to StatCorner.com, he is taking called strikes at a higher percentage. He is also making contact at the lowest rate of his career, whether the pitches are in or out of the strike zone.
On Monday's Leaderboards segment of Fantasy Baseball Today, we noted that Marte is still among the majors' top base stealers, but it's becoming questionable as to whether he will provide much else. Marte has scored 15 runs so far, but with a .308 on-base percentage that may not improve much, he could see that pace slow down.
So for me, Marte is one of the players whom I value much differently now than I did on Draft Day. I'll soon be finalizing a list of the players who have moved the needle for me substantially and writing a column to go more in-depth on why I value them differently after just a month of play. Brad Miller, Robbie Ross, Dallas Keuchel and Francisco Rodriguez are among the players on my current draft of that list.
