Martis signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Wednesday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. Martis spent the past couple seasons in the independent American Association, but he most recently put his talents on display for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic. His five solid relief appearances were evidently enough to warrant a minor-league deal, although he'll need to prove he can handle advanced hitters again after being away from affiliated baseball for a while.
Former Nationals and Twins pitcher Shairon Martis has signed a deal to pitch in Taiwan, according to SB Nation. Martin had two minor-league offers to pitch in MLB, but opted to take on a bigger role elsewhere. Martin posted a 5.35 ERA in 116 career innings.
The Twins outrighted outfielder Clete Thomas and pitchers Cole De Vries, Josh Roenicke and Shairon Martis off the 40-man roster Wednesday. Thomas hit .214/.290/.307 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 290 at-bats with the Twins this season. De Vries went 0-2 and gave up 18 earned runs in 15 innings over four appearances (two starts) with the major-league team. Roenicke went 3-1 with a 4.35 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 45:36 K:BB ratio in 62 innings over 63 appearances with the Twins. Martis made six relief appearances with the Twins, posting a 5.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB ratio in 9 2/3 innings while allowing three home runs on six hits.
The Twins recalled seven players from Triple-A Rochester Sunday, including shortstop Eduardo Escobar, outfielders Eric Fryer and Chris Parmelee, and pitchers Scott Diamond, Michael Tonkin, Cole De Vries and Shairon Martis. All seven players have previous major-league experience and will serve as depth for the Twins in the final weeks of the season.
The Twins reassigned pitchers Deolis Guerra, who is dealing with an injury, and Shairon Martis to minor-league camp on Saturday. Going to minor-league camp along with them are catcher Eric Fryer, infielders Chris Colabello and Mark Sobolewski and outfielders Brian Dinkelman and Clete Thomas. Guerra is expected to have a shot at being included in Minnesota's bullpen once he's recovered from rib resection surgery.
