Infante has secured a visa to travel to the United States but has yet to report to camp while being evaluated for the illness he developed during the offseason, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. Manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Infante met with team doctors in Miami, but no timeline was provided for the right-hander to arrive at spring training. Infante might be too far behind the rest of the team's other relief arms to make a serious run at winning an Opening Day roster spot.
Infante has yet to report to spring training from his native Venezuela, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. There is a lot of political unrest in Venezuela right now, delaying the visa process for a number of major leaguers. However, Infante is also dealing with an illness that doesn't allow him to leave the country just yet, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. This situation is unlikely to cause a lengthy absence, however, though it's unclear when he'll be back in the United States.
Infante agreed to a minor-league contract with the Orioles earlier this month, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. Infante's deal likely includes an invitation to big-league spring training that will afford him the opportunity to compete for a bullpen gig. The 31-year-old has been a serviceable reliever during parts of three seasons in the majors with the White Sox, accruing a 3.56 ERA and 7.9 K/9 while allowing only four home runs over 68.1 innings.
The White Sox designated Infante for assignment and outrighted him to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday. Infante has been at Triple-A since the end of April, and the move effectively just removes him from the 40-man roster. The 30-year-old has struggled for both the White Sox and Knights in 2018, with eight runs allowed over nine innings in the majors and 14 runs allowed over 18 innings at Triple-A.
Infante was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte by the White Sox on Saturday. The move comes between games of Saturday's doubleheader with the Royals, as the team made room for Dylan Covey, who is starting Game 2. Infante had a 3.13 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 49 strikeouts across 54.2 innings out of the White Sox bullpen in 2017, but he's allowed eight runs on 12 hits and eight walks over nine innings this season.
