Player Outlook
Javier Baez's time in Detroit has mostly been a disaster so far. The shortstop signed a six-year, $140 million contract with the Tigers before the 2022 season and has proceeded to struggle each of the last two years. After posting a .671 OPS in 2022, he bottomed out with a .592 OPS last year, which was his worst outside of the .551 OPS he posted as a 21-year-old rookie in 2014. By comparison, Baez averaged a .783 OPS across eight seasons before coming over to Detroit. Not surprisingly, his counting stats were down in 2023 as well, as he recorded only nine home runs and 59 RBI across 136 games. Baez lowered his strikeout rate a little bit, from 24.9% to 22.9%, though he continued to rarely take walks and mostly made weak contact on his swings. Now entering his age-31 season, Baez clearly looks like a player on the decline. Some fantasy managers will likely roll the dice given his past performance, though there is nothing in his recent profile to suggest a turnaround is coming anytime soon.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Out of lineup Friday

Baez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Twins, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Baez finally found some success at the plate recently with an .871 OPS across the past five games, but he'll head to the bench for Friday's series opener at Minnesota. Zach McKinstry will step in at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Doubles twice in loss

Baez went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 9-7 loss to the Rangers. The doubles were Baez's first of the season, and he's still sitting on just one home run across 17 games. The shortstop isn't hitting a ton of singles either, as he's batting just .172. While he's shown an ability in the past to heat up quickly, his struggles the past few seasons don't instill a ton of confidence. Baez should continue to see regular playing time, however, giving him an opportunity to turn things around.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Pops first home run

Baez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Twins. Baez has gotten off to a horrendous start, as he's batting just .140 with a .361 OPS even after the home run, which was his first of the season. The shortstop has had a rough time in Detroit the last three years, and his big contract is likely the main reason he's holding onto a starting role. However, the Tigers could choose to reduce Baez's playing time if he doesn't pick things up soon.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Sitting for Game 1

Baez isn't in the Tigers' lineup for the first game of Saturday's twin bill versus Minnesota. After striking out three times and failing to record a hit during Friday's contest, Baez will take a seat to kick off Saturday's activities. Zach McKinstry will get the nod instead at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Not in Sunday's lineup

Baez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the A's, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Baez is 4-for-26 through his first seven games of the season and will take a seat for Sunday's series finale versus Oakland. Zach McKinstry will step in at shortstop and bat eighth.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Taking seat Tuesday

Baez is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Mets. Baez had started each of he Tigers' first four contests, going 3-for-16 with a 6:0 K:BB. Zach McKinstry will fill in at shortstop Tuesday and bat ninth.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Scores lone run in opening win

Baez went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's 1-0 win over the White Sox. He also stole a base. Baez manufactured the game's lone run in the third inning. He led off the frame with a single, stole second, then advanced to third and scored on a pair of sacrifice flies. While it's a decently promising start for the shortstop, it was concerning to see him bat eighth on Opening Day. Baez may be able to have a bounceback campaign in 2024, though it would help his cause if he's able to move up in the order.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Spring struggles continue

Baez, who went 0-for-2 with an RBI in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, is now batting just .050 this spring. Baez has gone just 1-for-20 with 10 strikeouts across nine spring games. Veteran players can often be given a free pass for slow starts, but with Baez struggling mightily in his first two seasons with the Tigers, the recent performance is worrisome. The 31-year-old should still have a fairly firm hold on the starting shortstop role, though fantasy managers may want to look elsewhere, at least until Baez shows any signs of getting going at the plate.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Trying to overcome nagging injuries

Baez revealed Friday that he's dealt with nagging back and core issues over the last two seasons, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Baez altered his offseason training routine in order to strengthen those areas and said he's now feeling much better. Perhaps the injury problems can partly explain Baez's dreadful .230/.273/.361 slash line during his two years in Detroit, but fantasy managers will likely need to see tangible improvement from the 31-year-old before investing.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Finishes down year with two hits

Baez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Guardians. It was a nice game for Baez but a disappointing season, as he finishes with a .592 OPS, nine home runs and 59 RBI across 136 games. Excluding the condensed 2020 campaign, it was the first time the shortstop finished with fewer than 10 long balls since 2015. Baez has so far not come close to living up to the six-year, $140 million contract he signed with the Tigers before the 2022 season, though he figures to be a regular again in 2024 and will look to turn things around in Detroit. Baez does have an opt-out in his contract, though it seems financially unwise that he would take it.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Two doubles in return

Baez (back) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Athletics. Baez sat out three games with back tightness, and he returned with a strong showing. It was just his third multi-hit effort in September, and he's batting a paltry .233 (10-for-43) for the month. Overall, the shortstop has a .220/.268/.324 slash line with nine home runs, 58 RBI, 57 runs scored, 12 stolen bases and 16 doubles through 131 games.

Baez (back) is starting at shortstop and batting seventh Friday against Oakland. Baez has missed Detroit's last three games due to back tightness, but the issue appears to have subsided ahead of Friday's contest. Baez (back) is expected to rejoin the lineup Friday against the Athletics, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Baez has been out of the lineup for three consecutive games, but he is available off the bench Thursday. His return will likely hurt the playing time of Andy Ibanez.

Baez missed the final two games of the Tigers' three-game set at Dodger Stadium due to lower-back tightness and remains sidelined for Thursday's series opener against the Athletics. Baez was scratched from the Tigers' lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Dodgers due to lower-back tightness, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.. The Tigers haven't given any details on how severe Baez's injury is, but he should be considered day-to-day going forward. Zack Short will fill in for Baez at shortstop and bat eighth Tuesday.
