  • Adam Morgan: Announces retirement

Morgan recently announced his retirement from baseball, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Morgan hasn't played professionally at any level since opting out of his minor-league deal with the Astros last May and is now officially stepping away from baseball. The 33-year-old spent seven seasons in the majors and posted a 4.80 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 233 appearances (36 starts).

  • Adam Morgan: Parts ways with Houston

Morgan exercised the opt-out in his minor-league contract with the Astros and became a free agent Sunday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Morgan missed out on the Opening Day roster and will now look for other opportunities after spending the first three weeks of the season at Triple-A Sugar Land. The left-hander allowed three earned runs and had a 10:1 K:BB over 8.2 innings, and he finished the 2021 campaign with a 4.26 ERA over 34 appearances with the Cubs.

  • Astros' Adam Morgan: Joins Houston

Morgan signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Monday that includes an invitation to big-league spring training, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Morgan spent the 2021 season as a part of the Cubs bullpen, posting a 4.26 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while securing two saves over 25.1 innings in 34 appearances. The left-hander has been strictly a reliever since 2017 and will have an opportunity to join the Astros bullpen if he performs this spring. Overall, he doesn't represent a very intriguing option considering he has posted two straight seasons with a FIP north of 5.00.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Collects another win

Morgan (2-1) earned the win Wednesday over Pittsburgh. He walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning. The southpaw became the pitcher of record after Willson Contreras' two-run double put the Cubs ahead in the seventh inning. Morgan has been a bit shaky in September with five runs (four earned) allowed in six innings. He's posted a decent 4.26 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 28:12 K:BB in 25.1 innings overall, while adding two saves and four holds in 34 appearances.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Earns first win of season

Morgan (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning of relief and earned the win Sunday against the Brewers. He walked one. Chicago got only two innings from starter Keegan Thompson, then turned to Adrian Sampson and Morgan to navigate most of the game. The latter earned his first win of the season by recording a clean bottom of the seventh inning before the Cubs scored five in the top of the eighth. Morgan has been solid out of the bullpen this year, logging a 3.18 ERA across 22.2 innings with a 23:11 K:BB. He figures to stick in a middle-relief role the rest of the way.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Back from bereavement list

Morgan was activated off the bereavement list Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Morgan missed the maximum seven days while on the bereavement list. He'll give the Cubs a left-handed bullpen option over the final few weeks of the season. Two of his last six outings have resulted in saves, so it's possible he adds another save or two to his tally before the end of the year, though Rowan Wick has gotten the majority of the Cubs' recent save opportunities.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Placed on bereavement list

Morgan was placed on the bereavement list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Players may miss between three and seven days while on the bereavement list, placing Morgan's return sometime between Monday and Friday next week. Tommy Nance was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Pitches perfect ninth

Morgan secured a save while tossing a perfect ninth inning in Monday's 4-3 win over the Reds. The veteran collected his second save of the season after getting Tyler Naquin, Max Schrock and Joey Votto to go down in order to end the game. The 31-year-old has been very effective for the Cubs this season. Since the beginning of August, he has posted a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP while collecting four holds and two saves.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Notches first save

Morgan earned the save against the Rockies in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader with a perfect inning. The Cubs asked Morgan to protect a three-run lead in the final frame, and he did so with relative ease, setting down the side in order on 14 pitches. Codi Heuer -- who picked up Chicago's most recent save -- pitched in the fifth and sixth frames, suggesting that the team isn't locked into a single closer. That could bode well for Morgan, who has pitched well in his first campaign with the Cubs, posting a 2.50 ERA and 22:8 K:BB across 18 innings.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Contract selected by Cubs

Morgan's contract was selected by the Cubs on Tuesday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. Morgan joined the Cubs on a minor-league deal in January and wasn't in the mix to break camp with the team, as he was still working his way back from October elbow surgery. He's looked quite good in 16.1 innings of relief for Triple-A Iowa, however, backing up his 2.20 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with a 21:3 K:BB. Trevor Megill was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Excelling at Triple-A

Morgan (elbow) has allowed four baserunners (two hit batsmen, one hit and one walk) while striking out seven across five innings over his first four appearances at Triple-A Iowa this season. The lefty didn't make much of a push for a spot in the Cubs' Opening Day bullpen in spring training while he was still in recovery mode from an offseason elbow procedure, but he's turned some heads with his performance so far at Triple-A. Though the 31-year-old doesn't have a spot on the 40-man roster, he'll still likely represent one of the top options for a call-up if the Cubs require another southpaw reliever at any point in 2021.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Trending toward March return

Morgan (elbow), who agreed to a contract with the Cubs on Sunday, is expected to be ready for game action at some point in March, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. Upon undergoing surgery in October to repair the flexor tendon in his left elbow, Morgan initially appeared set to miss 6-to-8 months. Based on how his rehab has progressed thus far, Morgan looks like he'll be able to meet the short end of that recovery timeline, which could give him a shot at being ready for Opening Day. The 30-year-old joined the Cubs on a minor-league deal, so his lack of a 40-man roster spot will still hurt his case for claiming a bullpen role to begin the season.

  • Cubs' Adam Morgan: Latches on with Cubs

Morgan (elbow) signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Sunday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. The 30-year-old elected free agency after being outrighted off the Phillies' 40-man roster in late October, and he'll now receive another opportunity with the Cubs. Morgan underwent elbow surgery in early October that typically carries a 6-to-8 month recovery timeline, so he's unlikely to be ready for Opening Day.

  • Adam Morgan: Leaves for free agency

Morgan (elbow) elected free agency Friday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. Morgan filled a left-handed relief role capably enough from 2017 to 2019, posting a 3.97 ERA over that stretch. He struggled to a 5.54 ERA in 13 frames this season before landing on the injured list with shoulder fatigue and later wound up undergoing elbow surgery shortly after the end of the campaign. He'll likely miss the early part of the 2021 season while he recovers, hurting his already mediocre profile as a free agent.

  • Phillies' Adam Morgan: Outrighted off roster

Morgan (elbow) was outrighted off the Phillies' 40-man roster Thursday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. Morgan posted a 5.54 ERA in 13 innings of relief for the Phillies this season before landing on the injured list with shoulder fatigue. After the season, he wound up requiring surgery for an elbow injury. That pair of injuries plus his mediocre 4.84 career ERA mean he won't be a particularly attractive option should he wind up becoming a free agent.

  • Phillies' Adam Morgan: Requires surgery

Morgan will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a flexor pronator injury in his left elbow, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Morgan missed time in 2020 while dealing with a shoulder injury, and he didn't have stellar results during his 17 appearances. He posted a 5.54 ERA and career-worst 1.54 WHIP over 13 innings as his velocity has continued to decline over the past several years. Recovery from the surgery usually takes between six and eight months, so the right-hander likely won't be ready for Opening Day in 2021. However, Morgan is expected to pitch at some point next season as long as he doesn't experience any setbacks.

  • Phillies' Adam Morgan: Returns from injury

Morgan (shoulder) was reinstated from the injured list Friday. Morgan wound up missing just over the mandatory 10 days with shoulder fatigue. He'd failed to impress in 7.2 innings prior to the injury, posting a 5.87 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP, though he does own a career-best 31.4 percent strikeout rate. Connor Brogdon was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Phillies' Adam Morgan: Lands on injured list

Morgan was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder fatigue, retroactive to Aug. 31, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. Morgan has been relatively effective recently as he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings during his last six appearances. However, he'll be sidelined at least 10 days while he deals with a shoulder issue. Right-hander David Phelps was added to the active roster in a corresponding move.

  • Phillies' Adam Morgan: Bullpen competitors demoted

Morgan's grasp on a bullpen spot looks more secure after fellow lefties Cole Irvin and Austin Davis were demoted Thursday, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Morgan always appeared to be ahead of that pair, but Thursday's moves confirm that fact. There's still a chance he fails to win a bullpen spot, however, as Francisco Liriano was in camp as a non-roster invitee and could potentially beat him for a job if the team wants to carry just one other lefty in addition to Jose Alvarez.

  • Phillies' Adam Morgan: Moves past elbow injury

Morgan (elbow) is on track to be ready for the start of the season after reporting to spring training healthy, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Morgan made 40 relief appearances for the Phillies last season before he was shut down in early August with a flexor strain in his left elbow. The 29-year-old didn't require surgery to address the injury and looks to have benefited from an offseason of rest and rehab. After re-upping with Philadelphia on a one-year deal earlier in the winter, Morgan projects to serve as one of the top left-handed options out of the bullpen.
