Wolters signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Saturday, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports. Wolters had been in the Cubs' organization until he was released Monday. He appeared in 14 major-league games but struggled to a .125/.276/.125 slash line, dropping his career wRC+ at the big-league level to 57. He fared much better in 37 games for Triple-A Iowa, hitting .265/.385/.407, but he's unlikely to be anything more than an organizational depth option for his new club.
Wolters cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment by the Cubs earlier in the week, but he'll remain in the organization after going unclaimed on waivers. Wolters appeared in 14 games before being cast off the 40-man roster and went 3-for-25 with five walks, three runs and 12 strikeouts.
The Cubs designated Wolters for assignment Wednesday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Chicago will swap Wolters off the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for P.J. Higgins, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. Even though he saw few opportunities behind No. 1 catcher Willson Contreras, Wolters struggled in his limited action with the Cubs. He posted a .401 OPS and struck out in 12 of his 30 plate appearances (40 K%).
Wolters is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Sunday's game against the Reds. Willson Contreras (thigh) remains out of the lineup for the second straight day, so Wolters will again pick up the start. The 28-year-old slashed .230/.280/.270 in 42 games for the Rockies last year and doesn't offer a ton of value offensively, though he should remain in the lineup for however long Contreras is sidelined.
Wolters' contract was selected by the Cubs on Monday. Wolters was designated for assignment in mid-April and has been working at the Cubs' alternate training site after he went unclaimed on waivers. The 28-year-old will now rejoin the major-league roster as the backup catcher after Austin Romine (wrist) was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. Wolters has gone hitless with a walk and one strikeout in five plate appearances this season.
