  • Giles (elbow) is beginning a throwing program, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Giles has already been ruled out for the entire 2021 season. Assuming he continues to progress in his rehab, he should be ready to take the mound for the start of the 2022 campaign.

  • The Mariners placed Giles (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. Giles' move to the IL was merely a formality, as the Mariners already confirmed prior to spring training that the right-hander would miss the entire 2021 season while recovering from the Tommy John procedure he required in October. The 30-year-old signed a two-year, $7 million contract with Seattle in February, so the Mariners are hoping that a healthy Giles can return some value in the second season of the deal.

  • Giles (elbow) will not pitch this season under any circumstances, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Giles underwent Tommy John surgery at the end of September last year. If he winds up on the short end of the recovery timeline, he'd have had at least an outside chance of making an appearance or two very late in the year, especially if the Mariners managed to make the playoffs. The team ruled that out Friday however, with manager Scott Servais saying, "We will not let that happen."

  • Giles (elbow) agreed to a multi-year deal with the Mariners on Thursday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. Giles underwent Tommy John surgery in October, so he isn't likely to make a big impact in the 2021 campaign. In his last full healthy season in 2019, Giles was dominant with the Blue Jays by racking up 23 saves to go along with 83 strikeouts across 53 innings. While he could eventually factor into the saves picture for the Mariners in 2022, he will be 31 years old and coming off major arm surgery.

  • Giles underwent successful Tommy John surgery Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Giles battled elbow issues throughout the year and eventually had to undergo surgery. If his recovery is on the fast end of the typical window, he could theoretically return very late in the 2021 campaign, but the most likely scenario is that he doesn't pitch again until 2022.
