Cave was traded from the Phillies to the Rockies on Sunday in exchange for cash considerations, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The 31-year-old appeared in 65 games for the Phillies last season and underwhelmed as a bench option with a .212/.272/.348 slash line. Cave should fill a similar role with the Rockies as a depth piece in the outfield and at first base, though he'll have a better path to more regular playing time with his new team.... See More ... Phillies' Jake Cave: Avoids arbitration
Cave agreed to a one-year contract with the Phillies on Friday, avoiding arbitration. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it's probably worth something close to the $950,000 he earned in 2023. Cave gives Philly some left-handed pop off the bench while also providing corner-outfield depth.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench against righty
Cave will be on the bench Saturday against St. Louis. Cave has filled a platoon role for most of the second half, starting against most righties while sitting against every lefty, but that pattern may be changing. He's now sat for four straight games, two of which have come against right-handers, including Saturday's starter Miles Mikolas. As was the case Wednesday against righty Spencer Strider, it will be Brandon Marsh in left field and Johan Rojas in center.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Sitting against lefty
Cave isn't in the Phillies' lineup Friday against St. Louis. Left-hander Zack Thompson will start on the mound for the Cardinals on Friday, so the left-handed bat of Cave will remain in the dugout to begin the game. Cristian Pache will start in left field and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench Wednesday
Cave is absent from the lineup Wednesday versus Atlanta. Brandon Marsh, Johan Rojas and Nick Castellanos will start across the outfield for the Phillies as they take on ace right-hander Spencer Strider. Cave has been playing against most righties, but he carries a rough .230/.284/.385 overall season slash line.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Takes seat versus lefty
Cave is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus Atlanta. Cave delivered an RBI triple and a run scored in the second half of Monday's doubleheader, but he'll take a seat Tuesday as left-hander Max Fried graces the mound for the NL East leaders. Cave has batted just .148/.233/.185 in 31 plate appearances against lefties this year.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Not in Sunday's lineup
Cave is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Cave is 3-for-17 through five games in September and will take a seat Sunday against Miami opener Steven Okert. Kyle Schwarber will move out to left field while Bryce Harper rests his legs as the Phillies' designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench Friday
Cave is not in the lineup Friday versus the Marlins. Brandon Marsh will start in left field for the Phillies as Johan Rojas patrols center. Cave has gone 4-for-28 (.154) with 10 strikeouts over his last 12 games and carries a .235/.283/.386 slash line on the year.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Takes seat Sunday
Caves is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. Cave started the first two games of the series and will sit Sunday against Milwaukee lefty Wade Miley. Kyle Schwarber will man left field while Bryce Harper rests his legs at designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Gets day off versus lefty
Cave is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. As usual, the lefty-hitting Cave will exit the lineup while the Angels bring southpaw Reid Detmers to the bump. The Phillies will roll out an outfield of Kyle Schwarber, Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh from left to right in the series finale.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Takes seat Tuesday
Cave is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Angels. Kyle Schwarber is starting in left field and Bryce Harper will serve as the Phillies' designated hitter as they get set to face left-hander Tyler Alexander. Cave has batted just .130/.231/.174 in 27 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench versus lefty
Cave is out of the lineup Sunday versus the Cardinals. Kyle Schwarber will start in left field and bat leadoff with left-hander Drew Rom toeing the slab for St. Louis. Cave has slashed .130/.231/.174 in only 27 plate appearances against lefties this year.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Catches breather Monday
Cave is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants. Cave slugged three home runs and doubled twice in his last three starts to improve his playing-time outlook, but he will open Monday's game on the bench with southpaw Scott Alexander on the bump for the opponent. Edmundo Sosa will jump into the lineup with several players moving around to account for Cave's absence.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Takes seat against lefty
Cave is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Though he'll take a seat Wednesday with southpaw Braxton Garrett on the hill for Miami, the lefty-hitting Cave could soon see his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching trend down as well. Cave already sat against Marlins righty Sandy Alcantara on Tuesday, paving the way for rookie Johan Rojas to make another start in the outfield. Rojas will get his fourth straight start Wednesday and has provided a .678 OPS to go along with three stolen bases in his brief time in the big leagues this season. Cave has matched him with three steals but owns a much lower OPS (.596).... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench Tuesday
Cave is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins. Brandon Marsh will cover left field and Johan Rojas is playing center as the Phillies take on right-hander Sandy Alcantara. The left-handed-hitting Cave holds an overall .218/.274/.322 slash line in 96 major-league plate appearances this year and could continue to lose playing time if he's unable to pick it up down the stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Exits lineup
Cave is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. With a lefty (Rich Hill) on the mound for Pittsburgh, the lefty-hitting Cave will retreat to the bench. Cave had started in left field in each of the Phillies' last three games, going 3-for-10 with two doubles, two RBI and a run.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench Tuesday
Cave is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Orioles. Brandon Marsh will cover left field with Johan Rojas getting the start in center. Cave has slashed just .216/.280/.311 in 82 plate appearances this season at the major-league level and has struck out in five of his last seven at-bats. However, with Bryce Harper having recently picked up more work at first base to open up the designated-hitter spot for Kyle Schwarber, Cave looks as though he could be the Phillies' primary option in left field versus right-handed pitching.... Phillies' Jake Cave: Recalled from Triple-A
Cave was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. Cave has slashed .222/.286/.333 in 20 games this season with the big club. He's starting in left field Friday and could see some more starts there, as Kyle Schwarber is shifting to designated hitter while Bryce Harper gets a look at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: Sent to Triple-A
The Phillies optioned Cave to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. The move clears out a 26-man roster spot for Bryce Harper (elbow), who is back from Tommy John surgery and making his season debut Tuesday at Dodger Stadium. Cave, 30, had batted .222/.286/.333 in 20 games (70 plate appearances) this season.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Jake Cave: On bench against righty
Cave is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies. The lefty-hitting Cave will take a seat for the second straight game, this time versus a right-handed pitcher (Jose Urena) after previously exiting the lineup against lefty Kyle Freeland in Saturday's 4-3 win over Colorado. Though he's mostly held down a strong-side platoon role this season, Cave is hitting just .185/.262/.278 across 61 plate appearances and may be starting to lose some job security.... See More ...
