Farmer was sent down to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. A promising beginning to Farmer's season was stamped down over his past two starts: He allowed six runs in just 2.1 innings on Tuesday, and the Rays touched him up for seven runs over 2.1 innings on Sunday. After Farmer allowed 14 hits and five home runs in those two starts, his demotion prior to Anibal Sanchez's impending arrival Monday was an easy move for the Tigers.
Farmer (2-0) got tagged for six runs on nine hits over 2.1 innings but was able to escape with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Diamondbacks. He struck out four. The 26-year-old was dragged back to earth by a Diamondbacks squad that ranks second in the league against right-handers in wOBA (.348) after two strong starts against lesser offenses. Farmer gets another tough test Sunday at home against the Rays (fifth in wOBA against RHP at .341).
Farmer (2-0) tossed 6.2 scoreless innings Wednesday, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out five in a 4-0 win over the Angels. He's now delivered 13 shutout innings over two starts with a 16:3 K:BB, and Farmer seems to have done more than enough to lock up the Tigers' fifth starter spot going forward. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday at home against the Diamondbacks.
Farmer was officially recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. The Tigers sent Blaine Hardy packing Tuesday night to clear a spot on the active roster for Farmer, who is set to make his second start of the season and 10th career start Wednesday opposite the Angels' Alex Meyer. Farmer struck out 11 in 6.1 scoreless innings against the White Sox in his 2017 debut back on May 27, and if he holds his own Wednesday, he could get an extended look as Matt Boyd works some things out in the minors.
Farmer will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday to take the mound against the Angels. The Tigers were in need of a Wednesday starter after Matt Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Farmer enjoyed quite a bit of success in his only other start with the Tigers this season, tossing 6.1 scoreless frames while tallying 11 total strikeouts on May 27 against the White Sox. He'll be a sneaky fantasy option against an Angels' lineup sorely missing the services of Mike Trout.
