Guerra was released by the Angels on Friday. Guerra was designated for assignment by the Angels on Tuesday, and he'll now be free to seek out other opportunities in free agency. • Angels' Junior Guerra: DFA'd by Halos

Guerra was designated for assignment by the Angels on Tuesday. Guerra struggled for the Angels in 2021 with a 6.06 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 61:46 K:BB over 65.1 innings. The right-hander could remain with the team and compete as a non-roster invitee at spring training.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Back from IL

The Angels activated Guerra (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Sunday. Guerra hasn't pitched since Sept. 16 due to a hamstring strain. If he doesn't appear in Sunday's game, he'll have finished 2021 with a 6.06 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 65.1 innings.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Sidelined by hamstring strain

Guerra was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left hamstring strain. Guerra pitched poorly out of the bullpen Thursday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks across only one-plus inning. It's possible this injury was affecting his performance in the outing, and he'll now be out until at least late September.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Lit up in relief outing

Guerra allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one over one-plus inning Thursday versus the White Sox. Angels starter Alex Cobb gave the team five scoreless frames, but Guerra followed by surrendering a run in the sixth. He came back out for the seventh inning and allowed three straight hitters to reach base before he was pulled. Guerra threw only 16 of 33 pitches for strikes and has issued 10 free passes over his past 11.2 innings. The right-hander has posted a troubling 6.06 ERA and 1.73 WHIP overall this season.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Picks up win Monday

Guerra (5-2) earned the win Monday over the Yankees despite giving up two runs on one hit and a walk while striking out four over two innings of work. Guerra entered in the seventh protecting a two-run lead and quickly gave it up on a two-run homer from Giancarlo Stanton. The 36-year-old still managed to post four strikeouts and wound up with the win after the Angels scored a run to retake the lead in the eighth. Guerra has three wins, two holds and a loss in 11 appearances this month but for the year owns a 5.95 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 58:41 K:BB over 62 innings.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Earns win despite rough outing

Guerra (4-2) took the win against Baltimore on Tuesday, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four. The Angels' offense produced five runs in the second inning, but starter Dylan Bundy struggled with his control and was pulled after retiring only four batters. Guerra took over and was ultimately awarded the win despite struggling himself. He exited without retiring any batters in the fifth inning after Baltimore pounded out four straight hits to notch three runs. The right-hander has had a rough time this season, posting a 6.02 ERA and 1.71 WHIP across 58.1 innings. Over his past six appearances, Guerra has given up 13 earned runs in only 7.1 frames.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Surrenders two in loss

Guerra (2-2) lost Saturday's 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout in one-third of an inning. Guerra entered a 3-3 tie in the eighth and surrendered three hits including a two-RBI double to Chris Taylor that proved to be the deciding blow. The poor outing snaps a 6.2 scoreless inning stretch for the veteran righty, who now sports a 4.91 ERA with 32 walks and 42 strikeouts in 51.1 innings.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Throws three scoreless innings

Guerra tossed three scoreless innings against Oakland on Sunday, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out three. Oakland led 8-3 at the time of Guerra's entrance. The Angels were unable to mount a rally, but the right-hander was at least able to keep the A's from tacking onto their lead. The outing was a positive start to August for Guerra, who struggled through a rough July during which he allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks across 6.1 frames.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Returns from injured list

Guerra (groin) was activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday. The 36-year-old was sidelined for the past 10 days by the groin issue, but he'll rejoin the active roster after spending the minimum time on the shelf. Guerra is off to a rough start in 2021 with a 6.00 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB over 21 innings.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Lands on injured list

Guerra was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right groin Tuesday. Guerra was knocked around by the Astros while serving as an opener Monday, allowing three runs in just one inning of work. He's now given up 14 runs in his last 14 innings. It's unclear whether the groin injury is related to his struggles. Noe Ramirez's contract was selected in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Roughed up as opener

Guerra lasted only one-plus inning against Houston on Monday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. He did not factor in the decision. It's unclear how long Guerra could have pitched if not for the poor results -- he entered the contest having thrown against the Dodgers two days earlier, and he hasn't gone longer than 3.1 innings this season. He made pitch count a moot point, however, as the right-hander threw less than half of his pitches for strikes and was pulled after failing to retire a batter in the second frame. Guerra's 6.00 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 12.5 percent walk rate this season make him an unlikely candidate for high-leverage work.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Starting Monday

Guerra is starting Monday's game against the Astros, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Guerra will make his first start since 2018 as the Angels plan to rely heavily on their bullpen Monday. The right-hander has posted a 4.95 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 20 innings across 12 relief appearances to begin the year. Guerra's longest appearance of 2021 has been 3.1 innings, and it's not clear whether he could be on a pitch count Monday.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Contract selected

Guerra's contract was selected by the Angels on Tuesday. Guerra joined the Angels as a non-roster invitee in January and has evidently done enough to win a roster spot. He's struck out four, walked two and allowed two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings so far this spring.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Should be ready by Opening Day

Guerra threw a bullpen session Friday and is expected to have enough time to be ready for the start of the campaign, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Guerra arrived at camp late due to visa issues, but he joined the team Wednesday and has started his throwing program. That should give him plenty of time to ramp up before Opening Day, though he is on the roster bubble for a bullpen spot. Guerra pitched well enough with Arizona last season (3.04 ERA, 1.35 WHIP over 23.2 innings) to have a legitimate shot to break camp with the Angels, but he'll need to do better than the 14.6 percent walk rate he posted in 2020 to gain the trust of his new club.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Clears intake protocols

Guerra has cleared intake protocols and joined the Angels for workouts Wednesday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. Guerra's arrival at spring training was delayed due to visa issues, but he arrived at camp Monday and is now able to participate in team activities. He'll have nearly a month to prepare for Opening Day.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Goes through intake process

Guerra arrived at camp Monday and is going through the intake process, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Guerra faced visa-related delays at the start of camp like many players traveling into the country around the league. He'll still have a month to get up to speed by Opening Day.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Facing visa issues

Guerra will be a late arrival in spring training due to visa issues, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Guerra is one of several pitchers who won't be present for the start of spring training due to visa issues. It's not yet clear when he'll be available, but the right-hander should compete for a major-league roster spot with his new club once he's able to report to camp.

  • Angels' Junior Guerra: Signs MiLB contract

Guerra signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Saturday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Guerra was released by the Diamondbacks in November, but he'll land a minor-league role with the Angels. The 36-year-old has been relatively effective in the big leagues over the past two seasons, posting a 3.44 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 107.1 innings while making 97 relief appearances, and he should be in contention for a spot in the major-league bullpen during spring training in 2021.

  • Junior Guerra: Heads to open market

The Diamondbacks released Guerra on Monday. Guerra's release came three days after the Diamondbacks cast him off their 40-man roster. As he heads to free agency, Guerra will likely be in the market for a one-year deal or a minor-league contract after posting a 3.04 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB in 23.2 innings with Arizona in 2020.
