Player Outlook
Despite only recording two of the Angels' first seven saves, Carlos Estevez went on to convert a career-best 31 of the team's 43 total saves for a 72.1% team share that was ninth-highest among relievers. The hard-throwing right-hander quickly put a disastrous spring behind him to record a 1.50 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over the first two months of the season. He maintained solid ratios through the end of July, even earning his first All-Star selection, but he posted abhorrent numbers over the final two months to finish the year with a disappointing 3.90 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. The 31-year-old produced a career-best 27.8% strikeout rate thanks to his upper-90's fastball, but he also struggled with his command and control, as his 11% walk rate was his worst since his rookie season. Estevez is a wild card for fantasy purposes since he's in the final year of his contract with the Angels. He may open 2024 as LA's closer, but performance risk and/or a possible trade do not inspire much confidence.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Locks up save No. 4

Estevez struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save in a 7-4 win over the Orioles on Tuesday. Estevez struck out Jackson Holliday and Adley Rutschman while getting Gunnar Henderson to ground out to retire the side in order. Tuesday was his first appearance in a week since blowing a save against the Rays. Outside of that outing, Estevez has been very reliable as the team's closer and doesn't face much competition for the job with Robert Stephenson (elbow) out for the year and Jose Soriano in the rotation. He now has four saves to go along with a 2.57 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 7:0 K:BB in seven innings thus far.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: First blown save of 2024

Estevez gave up two runs on three hits in the ninth inning Tuesday to blow his first save of the season in a 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Rays. He struck out one. Called upon to protect a 3-1 lead, Estevez got two quick outs before the wheels fell off, with a Jose Caballero triple tying up the game. The Angels then had multiple other chances to put the game away before eventually falling in 13 innings. The runs were the first Estevez has allowed this season, and he's gone 3-for-4 in converting save chances with a 5:0 K:BB over six innings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches third save

Estevez earned a save over the Red Sox on Saturday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning. Estevez had only a one-run lead to work with when he entered to face the heart of Boston's order in the ninth frame, but he handled the pressure with aplomb, retiring all three batters he faced on 15 pitches. That earned him his third save of the campaign, and so far he's been excellent with just one baserunner and zero runs allowed over three frames. Estevez struggled in the second half of last season but appears to have the closer role locked up for the Halos in 2024 given how he's performed so far.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Earns save Monday

Estevez allowed a hit in a scoreless inning and picked up a save over the Marlins on Monday. Estevez allowed a leadoff single but had no trouble working around it to finish off the 7-4 win. He's fired two scoreless frames to notch a pair of saves so far in 2024, but he's yet to strike a batter out. Estevez registered an 11.3 K/9 with 31 saves during the 2023 campaign.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches first save

Estevez picked up the save Sunday against the Orioles. He pitched a clean inning with no strikeouts. Estevez calmly retired all three Orioles batters he faced Sunday to earn his first save of the season and 57th of his career. The 31-year-old reliever entered 2024 on the hot seat following the Angels' signing of Robert Stephenson over the winter. However, with Stephenson (shoulder) slated to be out until late April, Estevez should have no issue being the main saves target in the team's bullpen for now.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Favorite to close

Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Tuesday that Estevez remains the team's closer on paper even after the Robert Stephenson signing, Taylor Blake Ward of The Sporting News reports. Minasian did note, however, that the closer decision will ultimately be up to manager Ron Washington. Estevez was an All-Star in 2023 while notching 31 saves for the Angels, but he posted a 6.59 ERA after the All-Star break. Even if Estevez does indeed begin the season with the closer job, Stephenson will be a threat to usurp him, and Ben Joyce's triple-digit fastball also looms as a high-leverage option.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Strikes out two for 31st save

Estevez picked up the save in Saturday's 1-0 win over Minnesota, striking out two over one inning while not allowing any hits or walks. He also hit a batter with a pitch. Estevez entered the game with a one-run lead in the ninth and hit Kyle Farmer with a pitch in the opening at-bat before getting the next two batters to go down swinging. The right-handed reliever was then able to retire Christian Vazquez on a flyout to secure his 31st save of the season, marking the first time in his last four appearances that he didn't allow any hits or walks. Estevez has converted two of his last three save opportunities and has not given up a home run since Aug. 3.

Estevez (5-5) blew the save and took the loss Thursday against the Rays. He allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning. Estevez immediately ran into trouble allowing the first two batters (Harold Ramirez and Yandy Diaz) to reach via singles in the ninth inning. He was unable to stem the tide and eventually allowed the game-winning run to score via a Manuel Margot single. Before Thursday, Estevez had thrown four straight scoreless outings dating back to Sept. 5, his last blown save. He has 30 saves and four blown saves on the year.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Strikes out two for 29th save

Estevez picked up the save Wednesday against Philadelphia, striking out two over a perfect inning. Estevez got Alec Bohm to go down on strikes to open the bottom of the ninth before needing 17 pitches to retire Brandon Marsh in the following at-bat. The right-hander then made short work of Josh Rojas to close out the game and nail down his 29th save of the season. Estevez has now converted each of his last three save opportunities and has not issued a walk over his last eight appearances (spanning 8.2 innings). He's also recorded two strikeouts in five of his last seven outings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Nabs 28th save

Estevez picked up a save against the Mets on Saturday with a perfect inning of work. Estevez had no trouble protecting a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, retiring the side in order on 10 pitches (nine of which were strikes). The right-hander appears to be past a rough start to August during which he blew two saves and gave up nine runs over 2.1 innings across his first three appearances. Since that stretch, Estevez has gone 5-for-5 in save chances while holding his opponent scoreless in six of seven outings and posting a 9:0 K:BB over 7.2 frames.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Shows poise in 26th save

Estevez earned a save in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Rangers, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning. Estevez came on in the ninth frame to protect a two-run lead and quickly found himself in trouble when Mitch Garver and J.P. Martinez began the inning with back-to-back singles. However, Estevez bounced back to retire the next three batters and close the contest without further incident. After a three-outing stretch during which he allowed nine runs over 2.1 frames and blew two save chances, Estevez has bounced back to earn a save in each of his subsequent three opportunities, posting a 4:0 K:BB and tossing three scoreless innings over that stretch.

Estevez struck out two during a 1-2-3 ninth inning Sunday to slam the door on the Astros and pick up his 25th save of the year. Estevez locked down his second save of the week and needed just 12 pitches to send the Astros down in order. He struck out Grae Kessinger and Yainer Diaz before getting Jose Altuve to fly out to end the game. The 30-year-old seems to be getting back on track after some rough showings over the past few weeks. Estevez now holds a 3.42 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 58:27 K:BB in 47.1 innings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Melts down again

Estevez (5-3) allowed five runs on three hits and two walks in one-third of an inning Monday versus the Giants, taking the loss and a blown save. For the third time in five outings, Estevez allowed at least four runs. In that span, he's given up 15 runs (nine earned) across 5.1 innings while taking his first two blown saves of the season. The Angels' closer now has a 3.57 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 56:27 K:BB while converting 23 of 25 save chances through 45.1 innings. He's been playing with fire all year with a 5.4 BB/9, and it appears to be catching up to him now. For now, the Angels haven't indicated they'll remove Estevez from the closer role, but he'll need to put together some scoreless outings to restore confidence.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Implodes in blown save

Estevez (5-2) took the loss and blew a save against the Mariners on Thursday, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three batters over one inning. Estevez entered the contest a perfect 23-for-23 in save opportunities, but that fantastic run came to an end Thursday. The right-hander walked the first two batters he faced before a Dominic Canzone single loaded the bases. Estevez bounced back to strike out Teoscar Hernandez but then saw the game turn on its head when Cade Marlowe belted a grand slam on an 0-2 pitch. Estevez probably isn't yet in danger of losing his closing gig given his strong overall results this season, though he's struggled of late, allowing nine runs over four frames across his past three appearances.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Secures save Friday

Estevez allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 22nd save of the season in Friday's 8-5 win over the Pirates. Estevez went nearly three weeks between saves -- his last came July 2. The Angels went just 4-7 in that time, which explains his limited opportunities. While he's yet to blow a save chance this season, Estevez has allowed five runs over his last 11.2 innings with a 12:8 K:BB in that span. He's at a 2.08 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 39 innings overall.

He continues to work around traffic effectively -- he has a 1.85 ERA despite a 1.26 WHIP while racking up 42 strikeouts through 34 innings this season. He's converted 21 saves and added two holds while operating as the Angels' primary closer.

Estevez picked up the save Tuesday against the White Sox. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out one over one inning. Estevez took the reigns with a 4-1 lead, but he gave up a double to Eloy Jimenez on his first pitch and three consecutive singles to leave the bases loaded with no outs. However, Estevez managed to regain control of the inning, striking out Seby Zavala and then forcing Elvis Andrus to ground into a game-ending double play to secure the save. The save was his 20th of the year, good for fourth most in baseball.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Logs perfect inning

Estevez picked up the save in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Royals. He struck out one over a clean inning. Estevez bounced back from a shaky appearance Thursday, when he walked three batters and gave up a run while failing to record an out against the Rangers. Sunday's save marked his 19th of the campaign -- the third most in MLB -- and increased his ledger to a perfect 19-for-19 in save opportunities.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Struggles in save opportunity

Estevez allowed one run on three walks without recording an out Thursday against Texas. Estevez got the call in the ninth inning with the Angels up by three runs, but he could barely get the ball over the plate, tossing just eight of 20 pitches for strikes. The right-hander worked the count full against each of the three batters he faced and ended up walking them all before getting the hook, but Jacob Webb managed to contain the damage and notch the save. Estevez has been exceptional this season with a 1.80 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 39:16 K:BB and 18 saves in 18 chances, so Thursday's meltdown isn't likely to impact his job security.
