Helsley fired three scoreless innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday, allowing a hit and four walks while recording two strikeouts. Helsley was just recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday for yet another big-league stint, and manager Mike Shildt put him right to work in order to preserve some of his other bullpen arms. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Helsley hasn't been ruled out by Shildt as a possible opener candidate if the Cardinals occasionally deploy a "bullpen day" strategy down the stretch. The right-hander had been serving as a starter with the Redbirds to prep for a multi-inning role in the majors akin to the one he filled Monday.
Helsley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday. Helsey was sent to Memphis on July 21 and returns to the Cardinals after spending two weeks in the minors. The 25-year-old has a 2.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB through 12.1 major-league innings this season.
Helsley, who remains on the 40-man roster while at Triple-A Memphis, is expected to return to the Cardinals before the end of the season, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Helsley was most recently sent down to the Redbirds after throwing two scoreless innings in relief against the Reds on July 20. He's subsequently started in both of his appearances since returning to Memphis, throwing 48 pitches over 2.1 innings on July 25 before logging another three frames and 35 pitches Wednesday. Rogers reports Helsley could be an option as a spot starter if Michael Wacha struggles in his return to the rotation, or he could once again serve in the relief capacity he's generated a 2.92 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in across eight big-league appearances this season.
Helsley was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday, Rob Rains of StLSportsPage.com reports. He threw two scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's game, but the Cardinals will opt to churn the last bullpen spot, bringing up Tyler Webb in a corresponding move. We should see Helsley back up in the majors again when the team has a need of a fresh reliever.
Helsley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday. Helsley has a poor 5.06 ERA in 32 innings for Memphis, but he's actually fared better in 10.1 frames at the big-league level, posting a 3.48 ERA. His 29.3 percent strikeout rate in the majors is strong, but he's walked too many batters (12.2 percent). Edmundo Sosa was optioned in a corresponding move.
