Odom was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Odom got into the first 18 games of his MLB career this season but did very little with the opportunity, hitting .128/.209/.128 while striking out at a 45.5 percent clip. He'll remain in an organizational depth role for the Mariners heading into next season.
Odom is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. Odom will take a seat for the third time in four games in favor of Luis Torrens, whom the Mariners acquired from the Padres last week ahead of the Aug. 31 trade deadline. The 24-year-old Torrens is expected to serve as the Mariners' primary backstop the rest of the way, so Odom is poised to stick in the No. 2 catcher role he's filled throughout the season.
Odom will start at catcher and will bat ninth Monday against the Angels. After Austin Nola was dealt to the Padres on Sunday, Odom temporarily finds himself atop the Mariners' catching depth chart. Though he'll pick up his second straight start Monday, Odom could soon face competition from 24-year-old Luis Torrens, who was one of the young players Seattle received from San Diego in the deal. Odom is four years older and has been more of a defensive-minded catcher throughout his career, so the rebuilding Mariners would be incentivized to give the higher-upside option in Torrens a longer look in an everyday role.
Odom went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and one run scored in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Astros. After being sent to the Mariners' alternate training site Aug. 2, Odom was recalled to the 28-man roster Friday. The catcher did not play in either of the first two games of the weekend series but got the nod Sunday and made the most of it. He collected his first hit and RBI of his major-league career when a ground ball to right field drove in Evan White. He scored his first career run three batters later when Kyle Lewis drove him in with a single to center. Odom is expected to continue to back up Austin Nola behind the plate going forward.
Odom was recalled from the Mariners' alternate training site Friday. Odom was demoted to alternate camp at the beginning of August, but he'll rejoin the major-league roster after Joe Hudson was optioned to the alternate training site in a corresponding move. Odom should serve as catching depth behind Austin Nola.
