  • Diamondbacks' C.J. Chatham: Lands with new organization

Chatham agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks earlier this month, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Chatham, a former top prospect in the Red Sox system, has yet to make his MLB debut as he heads into his age-27 campaign. He spent the 2021 season in the Philadelphia organization and slashed .271/.341/.381 with three home runs and 23 RBI across 176 plate appearances for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

  • C.J. Chatham: Released by Phillies

Chatham was released by the Phillies on Sunday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Chatham was sent down by the Phillies on March 16, but he'll now be released so he can seek out other opportunities ahead of the regular season. The 26-year-old will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal after he hit .174 with two RBI and six strikeouts in 10 spring games this year.

  • Phillies' C.J. Chatham: Optioned to minors

Chatham was optioned off the Phillies' active roster Tuesday and sent to minor-league camp, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Chatham was in the mix to win a job as a bench infielder this spring but is now out of the competition with two weeks to spare despite fellow bench candidate Brad Miller dealing with an oblique issue. The 26-year-old could be called up sometime this season if the Phillies need an extra middle infielder, but he's unlikely to play a significant role in the team's plans.

  • Phillies' C.J. Chatham: Heading to Philadelphia

Chatham was traded from Boston to Philadelphia in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations Monday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Chatham may have a big-league future but doesn't look set for stardom. The 26-year-old was part of the Red Sox's player pool last season but didn't get the chance to make his big-league debut. He's only played 20 games at the Triple-A level, posting a 92 wRC+. Chatham has a classic bench infielder profile, as he makes decent contact and can play a fine shortstop but has very little power, hitting .298/.337/.402 over four minor-league seasons. He'll be in the mix for a bench spot with the Phillies this spring but is unlikely to be an exciting fantasy option even if he winds up with unexpected playing time.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Earns spot in player pool

Chatham was added to the Red Sox's 60-man player pool. Chatham was added to Boston's 40-man roster during the offseason, and he'll be in the mix for one of the added spots on the active roster to start the season. He can defend either position in the middle infield and is a contact hitter that's trending up at the plate, although the 25-year-old could stand to develop more power and learn how to take a walk.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Possible spot on expanded roster

Chatham is one of a few prospects that could land a spot on Boston's expanded roster, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. With speculation that minor league baseball may be canceled in 2020, there are reports that MLB teams will be able to expand rosters to 30 and could increase them by another 20 players with something akin to the NFL's practice squad. That creates an opportunity for Chatham, who was added to Boston's 40-man roster during the offseason. The 25-year-old shortstop added second base to his defensive profile in 2019, playing the position at Triple-A Pawtucket as well as in the Arizona Fall League. Second base has become a long-term spot of uncertainty due to Dustin Pedroia's lingering knee issues, so there could be a path for Chatham, who is considered the team's best pure hitting prospect by MLB.com. The knock on him is that he doesn't hit for much power and has an aggressive approach that limits getting on base. One of Chatham's stated goals in 2020 is to add more walks, plus he is coming off a season where he had more extra-base hits and total bases in 2019 than he did in 2018 in approximately the same number of at-bats.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Prepared for second base

Chatham made 12 starts at second base in the minors last season, then made another 10 starts there in the Arizona Fall League, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. The report discussed Boston's long-term options to replace Dustin Pedroia (knee) at second base, and Chatham was among the candidates along with Michael Chavis and Jeter Downs. The 25-year-old Chatham, who was a second-round pick as a shortstop in 2016, hits both lefties and righties but not for much power. Baseball America says he "is at least a big league reserve" and could be an everyday player, "if he adds offensive impact." The 6-foot-4 infielder hits to all fields and has a career .298 average in the minors.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Starting at shortstop Saturday

Chatham (shoulder) will start at shortstop in Saturday's spring game against the Yankees, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Chatham has served as the DH a couple times since being scratched with a sore shoulder just over a week ago, but he will occupy a spot in the infield Saturday, indicating he has put the injury behind him. Chatham will hit eighth in Saturday's batting order.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Battling shoulder soreness

Chatham was scratched from the lineup for Friday's exhibition game against Northeastern University due to a sore right shoulder, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. The issue doesn't appear to be overly serious and probably won't affect Chatham's readiness for Opening Day. He's likely to spend that day in the minors, as he's played only 20 games at the Triple-A level.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Added to 40-man roster

Chatham was added to the Red Sox's 40-man roster Wednesday. Chatham will no longer be eligible for selection in the upcoming Rule 5 draft. He should have a shot to make his debut at some point this season, though he's played just 20 games at the Triple-A level, where he recorded a 92 wRC+.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Bumped up to Triple-A

Chatham was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. The 24-year-old shortstop hit .297/.333/.403 with three home runs and seven steals in 90 games at Double-A. He has a chance to be a shortstop with a plus hit tool, which is a good place to start, but he is just an average runner, so he will need to start tapping into double-digit homer power to profile as a potential regular at the big-league level.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Drives in three

Chatham went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI, a run scored and a walk in Sunday's game against Minnesota. Chatham doubled with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to drive home three, pushing Boston's lead to six. He's gone 3-for-11 with four RBI and two runs scored so far this spring.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Lands invite to MLB spring training

Chatham received an invite to major-league spring training Thursday. The shortstop prospect put together a solid hitting display in the low minors last season, finishing the year with a .314/.350/.389 with three home runs, 52 RBI and 11 stolen bases between Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem. He also made contact over 80 percent of the time, but he benefitted from a BABIP in the .370's. Although he's already 24 years old, Chatham still has a bit of development to do in the minors before having a real chance to emerge at the major-league level.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Returns from DL over weekend

Chatham (illness) was activated from the minor-league disabled list over the weekend. It ended up being a minimal (one week) stay on the shelf for Chatham, who was sidelined with a viral infection. The 23-year-old is 0-for-7 with a walk in two games since returning from the disabled list, but he's still batting a healthy .306/.344/.415 across 46 games with High-A Salem on the year.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Back at Low-A Greenville

Chatham has hit safely in all three games thus far for Low-A Greenville, going 5-for-13 with a walk, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Chatham is doing his best to put behind him a lost 2017, when he was limited to 19 at-bats because of recurring hamstring issues. The 23-year-old shortstop, who was drafted in the second round of 2016, doesn't have any quality that stands out as elite, but doesn't have any negatives to prevent him from being an everyday shortstop.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Full participant at instructs

Chatham (hamstring) was able to fully participate in Fall Instructional camp, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. Chatham, a second-round draft pick in 2016, was limited to just 19 at-bats in 2017 because of recurring issues with the hamstring. With a year of development lost, the soon-to-be 23-year-old shortstop will repeat Low-A Greenville in 2018.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Begins rehab assignment

Chatham (hamstring) has begun a rehabilitation assignment with Boston's affiliate in the Gulf Coast League, Jim Crowell of SoxProspects.com reports. Chatham, who has been limited to just one game this season due to the injury, has played three games for the GCL Red Sox, going 2-for-8 with a run and a walk.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Back in action at Low-A

Chatham (hamstring) returned Friday for Low-A Greenville, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. He missed the first six weeks of the season with a strained hamstring. A 22-year-old shortstop, Chatham is older than most notable prospects at Low-A, so he will need to hit a lot in order to improve his prospect stock after posting a 123 wRC+ in short-season ball last season.

  • Red Sox's C.J. Chatham: Sidelined at Low-A

Chatham is sidelined at Low-A Greenville with a strained hamstring, MLB.com's Jim Callis reports. He suffered the injury right at the end of minor-league camp, and the hope is that he will be able to return to action later this month. In a suddenly shallow system, Chatham stands out as someone capable of sticking at shortstop, but his bat might be a little light, and he could grow out of what is currently average speed. He dealt with wrist/hand issues last year, so it would be nice if he could get fully healthy for a significant stretch.
