Player Outlook
Taylor Trammell didn't get many looks in 2023 for Seattle, and he didn't exactly shine when given the opportunity with a .612 OPS in 56 plate appearances over 22 games. The former top prospect did play well in Triple-A Tacoma and at the age of 26, there's still time for him to develop into a big-league option. In order to do so, he's going to have to start making more consistent contact, as he swung and missed on 42.3 percent of his swings and ended at-bats with a strikeout 39.3 percent of the time. He also would have ranked among the league leaders in barrel percentage (16.7) and walk rate (16.1) if he had qualified, so there is some better to take with the bitter. Trammell will likely battle for a roster spot with Seattle in 2024 and he does still offer some fantasy upside if he earns a regular role, but nothing suggests that he'll earn that type of playing time next season.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Moves off 40-man roster

The Mariners designated Trammell for assignment Thursday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Trammell was decent during spring training, slashing .250/.385/.406 across 39 plate appearances, but he will be pushed off the Mariners' 40-man roster heading into the new campaign. The 26-year-old outfielder owns just a .168 average through 304 career at-bats, but he may get some attention on the waiver wire after posting a .920 OPS in Triple-A last season.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Knocks first spring homer

Trammell went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a Cactus League tie with the Brewers on Friday. The 26-year-old outfielder's second-inning homer with Luis Urias aboard put the first runs of the day on the board. It was Trammell's first round-tripper of the spring. Trammell also pushed his Cactus League average and OPS to .276 and .865, respectively, with the blast; however, whether he makes the cut for the Opening Day roster with Mitch Haniger, Julio Rodriguez and Luke Raley healthy across the outfield, and several other players versatile enough to spell them also available, remains to be seen.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: First hits of spring Wednesday

Trammell went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, a stolen base and a run in the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the Royals on Wednesday. After going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in his first two Cactus League games, Trammell broke out for a highly productive afternoon. The 26-year-old prospect has hit well at Triple-A Tacoma but struggled throughout his time in the majors over his last three seasons, producing just a .168 average, .639 OPS and 37.0 percent strikeout rate across the 351 career plate appearances he's logged against big-league arms. The offseason additions of Mitch Haniger and Luke Raley have fortified the Mariners' corner outfield spots, but Trammell could potentially carve out a role as a reserve option in both the outfield and at designated hitter with a strong enough spring.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Solid since return to Tacoma

Trammell owns a .265/.429/.588 slash line with 10 extra-base hits and 14 RBI across 91 plate appearances over 21 games since his most recent demotion to Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 1. Trammell has slugged six homers and drawn 19 walks over that span as well, although his issues with consistent contact have persisted in the form of a 31.9 percent strikeout rate. The solid numbers strike a welcome contrast from Trammell's big-league stints this season, during which he's posted a .130 average, .612 OPS and 39.3 percent strikeout rate over 22 games. If Trammell continues to hit well on the farm, a return to the big-league club when rosters expand Sept. 1 could be in play.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Sent to Triple-A

Trammell was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday. The 25-year-old will head back to the minors with trade-acquisitions Josh Rojas and Dominic Canzone officially joining the active roster. Trammell has a .612 OPS in 56 plate appearances this season but could rejoin the Mariners down the line if they need outfield help.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Returns to majors

Trammell was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Trammell has batted just .133/.278/.333 across 20 games in the big leagues this season. He could see some playing time in left field while Jarred Kelenic (foot) and AJ Pollock (hamstring) are out, but Cade Marlowe and Dylan Moore might be the preferences there.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Optioned to Triple-A

Seattle optioned Trammell to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. This move clears out a major-league roster spot for Mike Ford, whose contract will be selected Friday. Trammell, 25, has batted just .133/.278/.333 across 20 games (54 plate appearances) this year in the big leagues.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Productive near bottom of order

Trammell went 0-for-2 with two walks and a run in a loss to the Yankees on Monday. Trammell got the call at designated hitter for only his second start since May 20, reaching safely multiple times via walk or hit for the first time since May 7 in the process. However, Trammell's overall struggles at the plate, which are encapsulated in his .143/.294/.357 slash line, are likely to keep his playing time fairly irregular as long as the starting outfield is healthy.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Out again Sunday

Trammell is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. The lefty-hitting Trammell is sitting for a second consecutive game even though the Pirates are throwing right-hander Luis Ortiz in the series finale. Cal Raleigh will operate as the designated hitter for Seattle on Sunday with Tom Murphy filling in for Raleigh behind the plate.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Breather Saturday

Trammell is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Pirates. Trammell will take a seat after he went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts in Friday's 11-6 loss. The left-hander has now gone 3-for-22 with a solo homer, four RBI, a walk and 10 strikeouts over the last two weeks. Eugenio Suarez will start at designated hitter while Kolten Wong starts at second base, batting ninth, after some lineup shuffling.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Gets Tuesday off

Trammell isn't starting Tuesday against the Athletics. This marks the third consecutive game Trammell has started in the dugout -- likely due to his .147 batting average on the season. Cal Raleigh will take over as Seattle's designated hitter Tuesday, allowing Tom Murphy to start behind the dish and bat ninth.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Takes seat against southpaw

Trammell is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's finale against Atlanta. Trammell will grab a seat on the bench with left-hander Jared Shuster on the bump for Atlanta on Sunday. AJ Pollock will get the start in left field while Jarred Kelenic is operating as the designated hitter.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Belts third homer

Trammell went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Red Sox. The Mariners did all their scoring in the fourth inning, with Trammell's shot off Nick Pivetta being the big blow. The outfielder is still looking for his first multi-hit performance since coming off the IL to make his season debut in late April, going 4-for-25 (.160) in 11 games, but three of those four hits have left the yard.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Stays on bench Wednesday

Trammell is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The lefty-hitting Trammell took a seat in Tuesday's 5-0 win while lefty Andrew Heaney was on the hill for Texas, but the former's absence from the lineup is more conspicuous Wednesday with the Rangers bringing right-hander Dane Dunning to the bump. Trammell's move to the bench against a righty could suggest that he's not as secure in a strong-side platoon role as was previously thought. Since returning from the injured list April 30 and producing two home runs in his first four games, he's gone 1-for-9 with three walks and four strikeouts over his subsequent four contests.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Getting regular run versus righties

Trammell will start in left field and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Astros. Trammell will remain in the lineup for the fifth time in seven games and appears to have solidified a regular role in the starting nine against right-handed pitching. AJ Pollock, meanwhile, is on the bench for the fourth consecutive contest and looks to be the main loser from a playing-time perspective while Trammell has seen his role grow.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Homers, drives in three

Trammell went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, an additional RBI and a walk in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Athletics. Trammell's two-run blast put the Mariners ahead briefly in the third inning. He also drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth. Over four games since he was activated from the injured list following a hand injury, he's gone 2-for-8 with two homers, seven RBI, two walks and three strikeouts. Trammell continues to serve as a reserve option, primarily seeing time in left field when he plays, but Jarred Kelenic is likely to see most of the games there once a banged up Julio Rodriguez gets back into center field.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Gets start in left field

Trammell is starting in left field and batting eighth for the Mariners on Thursday in Oakland, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Julio Rodriguez is getting another start at designated hitter as he's eased into things following a minor back issue. It has resulted in Jarred Kelenic sliding over to center field and Trammel getting a start in left.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Hitting well in rehab assignment

Trammell (hand) is hitting .357 (5-for-14) with a double, an RBI, two walks, two stolen bases, a hit-by-pitch and four runs across the first four games of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma. Trammell has hit safely in each game thus far and has played a full game in the outfield on three of those occasions. However, given the Mariners outfield is essentially at full health at the moment and Trammell has had trouble making consistent contact against big-league arms during his stints in Seattle the last two seasons, he could remain with the Rainiers once he's officially activated in order to continue logging regular at-bats.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Begins rehab assignment

Trammell (hand) went 1-for-5 with a double in Triple-A Tacoma's win over El Paso on Tuesday. Making his season debut after suffering a broken hamate bone in his right hand, Trammell played a full nine innings in center field. The 25-year-old, who hit under .200 in each of his first two big-league stints in 2021 and 2022, may remain with the Rainiers once his recovery is deemed complete.

  • Mariners' Taylor Trammell: Playing for Tacoma on Tuesday

Trammell (hand) is in the lineup for Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Mike Curto of the Tacoma Rainiers reports. It's the first time that Trammell is suiting up for the Rainiers as he rehabs from a broken hamate bone in his right hand. The outfielder will likely need a full rehab assignment before being ready to return to the Mariners, and when healthy, Seattle will have to make a roster decision on the 25-year-old.
