Jose Fermin was acquired from Cleveland last winter, but his bid to win an Opening Day bench spot with the Cardinals ended before it began when he suffered a severe quad strain early in spring training which wound up sidelining him for nearly four months. He saw some spot duty with the Cards down the stretch and showed a solid glove, but his bat lagged well behind. That's been the case with Fermin throughout his days in pro ball, as he's never even had an .800 OPS in a season and sports a .709 OPS during his time at Triple-A. The power is basically non-existent and he hasn't displayed any stolen base chops since A-ball. Fermin will be in the mix for a reserve role in St. Louis, but they figure to be in trouble if he has to play very much.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Optioned to Triple-A

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Three-hit effort Friday

Fermin went 3-for-3 in Friday's Grapefruit League win over the Mets. Fermin's big game has him hitting .385 (5-for-13) over six spring games. The 24-year-old projects as a utility infielder if he makes the Cardinals' big-league roster out of camp. Fermin had limited success last year, batting .235 with a .594 OPS across 61 plate appearances. With established options at most, if not all, of the infield positions, Fermin's playing time is unlikely to be significant barring injuries to other players.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Fermin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Fermin is 5-for-18 with a walk and no extra-base hits in six games since being promoted from Triple-A Memphis in early September. The 24-year-old has seen more action of late with Nolan Arenado (back) shut down for the final stretch of the season, though it's Juniel Querecuto starting at third base Wednesday.

Fermin finds himself on the bench for the second straight game after he started the previous three contests. The 24-year-old has a .497 OPS in 43 plate appearances this season and should continue to see opportunities during the final week with Nolan Arenado (back) shut down.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Recalled from Triple-A

The Cardinals recalled Fermin from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. The Cardinals had plenty of holes to fill after unloading their roster prior to Tuesday's trade deadline, and Fermin will come up from Memphis to provide depth in St. Louis' infield. The 24-year-old is slashing .200/.347/.450 through 49 plate appearances in Triple-A.

Fermin (quad) was activated from the injured list Monday at Triple-A Memphis. St. Louis acquired the 24-year-old infielder from Cleveland over the winter in exchange for cash considerations. He slashed .215/.336/.322 with six homers and nine steals in 90 games last year at Triple-A Columbus.
