Oviedo is set to miss the entire 2024 season after he underwent Tommy John surgery in December, so his move to the IL is merely a procedural one. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for left-hander Josh Fleming, whom the Pirates signed to a one-year deal Wednesday.

It was announced in late November that Oviedo would require the reconstructive elbow procedure, and the long road back to full health can now get underway. Oviedo seemingly suffered an elbow injury in the offseason after getting through the 2023 campaign without any reported issues, and he's now in line to miss all of 2024. Oviedo put up a 4.31 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 158 strikeouts across 177.2 innings last season, and his absence will surely be felt by a Pirates pitching staff that finished near the bottom of the National League in ERA (4.60).

  Oviedo is dealing with a right elbow injury which could potentially require Tommy John surgery, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Oviedo didn't battle any known elbow issues during the regular season, so this news comes out of the blue. Mackey notes that while nothing has been decided yet in regards to how the injury will be treated, Tommy John surgery "has been discussed." Oviedo would be sidelined until 2025 if that procedure is ultimately required. The right-hander went through ups and downs with the Pirates in 2023 but had a fairly encouraging season overall in collecting a 4.31 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 158:83 K:BB over 177.2 innings. It was more than a 60-inning jump from his 2022 workload.

  Oviedo (8-14) took the loss Sunday, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and six walks over 3.2 innings against St. Louis. He struck out two. Oviedo tossed a complete game shutout in his previous start last Monday, but it took Oviedo 97 pitches to record 11 outs Sunday, throwing only 48 for strikes. He was nearly able to finish the fourth and keep the game tied but was removed following an error and two walks that loaded the bases. Reliever Ryan Borucki then allowed a single to Alec Burleson, which plated two and eventually saddled Oviedo with the loss. Oviedo will carry a 4.27 ERA into his next start, currently scheduled to take place next weekend in Atlanta.

Things looked ominous right away for the big right-hander, as the first four batters of the game reached base and three of them scored. Oviedo looked like he might settle in after that, retiring 10 of the next 11, but then light-hitting catcher Luke Maile clubbed a three-run shot in the fourth inning. He needed 93 pitches to cover his five frames. Oviedo came into this one with a 2.32 ERA since the All-Star break, but this was certainly a step back.

He's allowed one run or fewer in four of his last five starts and has 11 such starts this season, good for second in the National League. With Sunday's spectacular outing, Oviedo has tied Mitch Keller for the team lead with 12 quality starts and now possesses the lowest ERA on the team (4.21). He'll look to keep rolling in a projected start against the Reds next weekend.

Most of the damage came in the fifth inning, when Oviedo gave up three hits to the first four batters faced before getting yanked after 100 pitches. Though he struggled to limit damage, he popped for his second-most punchouts of the campaign after recording five strikeouts in each of his last four starts. After allowing five runs and three homers in his first start of 2023, Oviedo has given up just two long balls since, with a 4.18 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 71 innings (13 starts) during that span.
