Player Outlook
He struggled in a late-season look as a starter (7.50 ERA), but Tristan Beck was effective when used in relief by the Giants, collecting a 3.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB over 73 innings. A .613 OPS against right-handed batters and .820 OPS versus left-handed hitters would also seem to point to his future being in the bullpen. While Beck has missed bats at a solid 24.5 percent rate in the minors, that number dropped as he moved up levels and his 19.2 percent mark with the Giants suggests he might not produce much swing-and-miss in the big leagues. Beck also no longer looks like he'll be much of a groundball guy, holding a 35.2 percent rate at Triple-A Sacramento and a 40.8 percent rate with the Giants in 2023. It seems unlikely that the 27-year-old will be entrusted with a starting role or high-leverage relief role.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Shut down for eight weeks

Beck will be shut down from throwing for eight weeks after undergoing vascular surgery Monday to address the aneurysm in his upper right arm, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. He'll face a long ramp-up period after that, so Beck probably won't be ready at least until around midseason if all goes well. The right-hander has already been placed on the 60-day injured list.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Moves to 60-day IL

Beck (arm) was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. The right-hander is scheduled to undergo vascular surgery Monday to address the aneurysm in his upper right arm, and he'll be sidelined for at least the first two months of the regular season. Beck remains without an official timeline for his return, but more information is expected to be available following his procedure.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Evaluated for hand injury

Beck has been sent back to San Francisco to be evaluated due to right hand discomfort, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Beck has not made a Cactus League appearance yet this spring but evidently has felt something in his hand while throwing. More should be known about a potential timetable for his return after he's examined. Beck and Keaton Winn (elbow) are expected to slot into the final two spots in the Giants' rotation, but both players are now dealing with injuries.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Scheduled to start Saturday

Beck is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The 27-year-old right-hander should be in line for a traditional start after he had been operating in a piggyback or bulk-relief role for much of his various stints with the big club this season. Beck owns a 4.05 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 65:20 K:BB through his first 80 major-league innings this season with San Francisco.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Decent in bulk role

Beck allowed two runs on four hits and struck out three over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Sunday. Beck handled bulk-relief duties behind opener Ryan Walker in this contest. This was Beck's third outing in September, and he's allowed 10 runs (eight earned) over 8.1 innings in that span. Overall, he's maintained a 4.05 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 65:20 K:BB through 80 innings across 32 appearances (two starts). Assuming Beck stays in the majors to close out the year, he'd likely be available for one more appearance in the final series of the season at home against the Dodgers.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Recalled from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Beck from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Beck had been struggling badly in a swingman role just prior to his Sept. 4 demotion, but he holds a decent 4.04 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 62:20 K:BB in 75.2 overall major-league innings this year. The right-hander will return in long relief ahead of Thursday's series opener at Dodger Stadium.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Optioned to Triple-A

San Francisco optioned Beck to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Beck had been lit up for 11 runs -- nine earned -- over his last 8.1 innings (two starts, one relief appearance) with the Giants. John Brebbia (lat) is returning from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Gets starting nod Sunday

Beck will serve as the Giants' starting pitcher for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Beck will be picking up his first MLB start Sunday, but he may not be able to reach the five innings he would need to qualify for a win. After making a one-inning relief appearance Wednesday in Philadelphia, Beck will be taking the hill on three days' rest. Beck hasn't covered more than four innings in any of his relief outings with the Giants since the start of June, turning in a 2.85 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB over 41 frames during that stretch.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Goes three innings Sunday

Beck allowed two hits and struck out three without walking a batter over three scoreless innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Sunday. Beck ultimately functioned as the bulk reliever following shorter appearances from Jakob Junis and Alex Wood over the first three innings. Over six outings in August, Beck has allowed eight runs, 16 hits and three walks while striking out 13 over 14.1 innings. He'll continue to be in the mix for multi-inning assignments out of the bullpen, but it seems unlikely he'll start often down the stretch. Beck has a 3.39 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 54:16 K:BB through 66.1 innings over 27 outings this year.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Struggles versus Rays

Beck (3-2) allowed five runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out two over three innings, taking the loss Monday versus the Rays. Beck took his turn as a bulk reliever Monday, but he couldn't continue the success of opener Ryan Walker, who started the game with two scoreless innings. Beck has lost his last two appearances, and he's at a 6.97 ERA over 10.1 innings across four outings in August. For the season, he has a 3.61 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 49:16 K:BB through 62.1 innings over 25 appearances while adding two saves and a hold, though his current role makes late-inning assignments unlikely. Beck will likely be available to pitch again this weekend in Atlanta, but the Giants' tendency to have as many as three rotation spots working behind openers makes it tough to pinpoint when he might next take the mound.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Falters in first loss

Beck (3-1) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Angels. Beck was called on with one on and no outs in the sixth inning, but he allowed three straight batters to reach base. A Mike Moustakas three-run home run at the end of that stretch put the Angels ahead for good, setting Beck up to take his first major-league loss. He's been effective in a long-relief role with a 3.03 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB through 59.1 innings over 24 appearances.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Collects win Sunday

Beck (2-0) earned the extra-innings win Sunday over the Red Sox, walking one and striking out three over two scoreless and hitless innings. Beck was called up from Triple-A Sacramento earlier in the day to provide some length out of the bullpen with Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) landing on the injured list. Beck did his job well, working the 10th and 11th innings before Joc Pederson's bases-loaded walk forced in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th. Beck has a 2.94 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 41:13 K:BB through 52 innings over 21 appearances at the major-league level this year. His role is likely to be versatile while he's with the Giants, so he could have some chances to vulture wins if he gets middle-innings assignments.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Optioned to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Beck to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. Beck has been solid out of the bullpen for the Giants this season with a 3.06 ERA and 1.12 WHIP through 50 innings, but he'll return to the minors to clear a spot on the roster for Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder). As long as Beck keeps performing as well as he has been, there's a good chance he returns to San Francisco later this summer.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Returns from thumb injury

Beck has pitched twice since recovering from a cut on his thumb, covering 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Beck left his June 25 appearance versus the Diamondbacks with a cut on his thumb, but it was always expected to be a minor issue. He's been an effective long-relief option for the Giants this season, pitching to a 3.20 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 35:12 K:BB through 45 innings across 18 appearances. Beck could continue to work in bullpen games and whenever the Giants need a reliever to cover multiple frames.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Dealing with cut on thumb

Beck exited Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks due to a cut on his thumb, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Beck wasn't particularly sharp during Sunday's relief appearance, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one in 2.1 innings. His injury likely contributed to his struggles, although it's unclear whether he'll be forced to miss additional time.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Goes four innings for save

Beck allowed three hits and a walk while striking out two over four shutout innings to earn the save in Saturday's 15-0 win over the Dodgers. This was a smooth outing with plenty of cushion for Beck, who helped the Giants spare their bullpen after they used eight pitchers in Friday's 11-inning contest. This is the second time Beck's gone three-plus innings to earn a save this season. He's been an effective long-relief option for San Francisco with a 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 30:6 K:BB over 35.1 innings in his first big-league season. He also has a win and a hold through 14 appearances.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Sent back to minors

The Giants optioned Beck to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Beck covered 4.1 innings over two relief appearances during the Giants' series with the Cubs this past weekend and wasn't likely to be available for the next couple of days, so San Francisco opted to swap him off the 26-man active roster for a fresh relief arm in Keaton Winn, who was called up from Triple-A. During his upcoming stint with Sacramento, Beck is expected to transition back into a starting role in the event he's needed in the San Francisco rotation later in 2023.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Called up Wednesday

Beck was called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Beck will join the Giants ahead of their series finale against the Marlins, replacing Alex Wood (hamstring), who was added to the 15-day injured list. Beck had been starting for Sacramento, producing a 3.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with nine punchouts over 13.1 innings. Though the Giants have an opening in the rotation with Wood on the shelf, Ross Stripling is expected to get the first chance to replace the southpaw, so Beck may be on hand with the big club as a long-relief option.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Optioned to Sacramento

Beck (ankle) was optioned Tuesday to Triple-A Sacramento, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Beck was removed from a Cactus League appearance this past Sunday after taking a comebacker off his left ankle, but all seems to be well in that regard. The 26-year-old could get the call to the Giants as emergency rotation depth at some point in 2023.

  • Giants' Tristan Beck: Struck by comebacker

Beck exited Sunday's spring game against the A's after being hit in the left ankle with a comebacker, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Beck came out of the bullpen Sunday and delivered 2.2 scoreless frames before exiting the contest. It's unclear if the 26-year-old will be available for his next turn through the rotation, and he should be considered day-to-day until his status is updated.
