Valera will be a part of the Indians' taxi squad this season, Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports. Valera has a chance to develop into an outfielder who hits for a high average and hits for plus power, but he only played six games at Low-A last season, so he is hardly ready to have success against big-league pitching. It's unclear exactly how much action players such as Valera will get off the taxi squad this year, but it is very unlikely that he provides notable value in redraft leagues.
Valera is opening the year in extended spring training before being assigned to a short-season affiliate in June, MLB.com reports. Considering how advanced Valera is for his age (18), it wouldn't have been shocking for the Indians to assign him to Low-A, but this was always the more likely scenario. He will either go to the AZL or the New York-Penn League in mid-June.
