Albert Suarez is back in the big leagues for the first time since he made 18 relief appearances for the Giants in 2017. The Orioles signed him to a minor-league contract this past offseason after he pitched in the KBO from 2022 through 2023. Suarez was a groundball machine in Korea, generating grounders over 60 percent of the time. In three Triple-A appearances, Suarez struck out 17 batters and walked one in 15.1 innings. He continued to be stingy with free passes in his first start for the big club, striking out four with zero walks in 5.2 frames. Suarez sat at 96 mph with his fastball, which he threw over 62 percent of the time, while his upper-80s cutter was his go-to secondary pitch.   • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Unscored upon again in victory

    Suarez (1-0) earned the win over the Angels on Monday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings. Suarez got another turn in the rotation after holding Minnesota scoreless in his season debut Wednesday, and he turned in a very similar pitching line. The right-hander again completed 5.2 scoreless frames, this time getting enough run support to earn his first major-league win since 2016. Suarez has now completed 11.1 scoreless innings to begin the campaign, though his lack of previous big-league success makes it reasonable to question if he can sustain his effectiveness. It's worth noting that the right-hander pitched in Korea over the previous two campaigns, and though he wasn't exactly dominant, it's possible that tenure helped him uncover something that is helping with his approach to major-league hitters. Suarez appears set to stick in Baltimore's rotation for the time being, and he lines up for a favorable matchup against Oakland in his next projected start.

    Suarez is slated to start Monday's series opener versus the Angels in Anaheim, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Though he was summoned from Triple-A Norfolk last week to make what was expected to be a spot start, Suarez will end up drawing a second turn through the rotation after he struck out four over 5.2 shutout innings against the Twins in what was his first MLB appearance since 2017. Both John Means (forearm) and Kyle Bradish (elbow) are in the midst of minor-league rehab assignments and may be ready to return from the 15-day injured list within the next week or two, but Suarez could be able to stick around in a starting role if he delivers another quality performance versus the Angels. Dean Kremer (4.91 ERA, 5.28 FIP in 22 innings) and Cole Irvin (4.64 ERA, 4.18 FIP in 21.1 innings) have served as the Orioles' back-end starters so far this season, but neither has performed well enough early on to be fully locked into a rotation spot for the long haul.

The 34-year-old was a surprise selection to start Tuesday, which was his first MLB appearance since 2017, but he pitched well with 14 swinging strikes on 75 pitches and allowed just four baserunners. According to Jake Rill of MLB.com, manager Brandon Hyde said Suarez will get additional turns through the rotation, which isn't a major surprise given his performance and the numerous injuries Baltimore is managing to its rotation.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Draws start Wednesday

    The Orioles selected Suarez's contract from Triple-A Norfolk and will have him start Wednesday's game against the Twins at Camden Yards. Suarez will be making his first appearance in the majors since 2017, when he tossed 31.2 innings out of San Francisco's bullpen. He had spent the last five seasons overseas in Japan and Korea before making his return to affiliated ball this winter, when he signed a minor-league deal with Baltimore. Though he didn't secure a spot on Baltimore's Opening Day roster, Suarez didn't have to wait long for a call-up while logging a 5.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB in 15.1 innings over three appearances (one start) for Norfolk. He'll be stepping into the rotation spot that opened up after Tyler Wells (elbow) was placed on the injured list, but Suarez may be in line for just one start before heading back to the minors. John Means (elbow) is set to make the fourth start of his rehab assignment Wednesday and could be ready to return from the IL when the Wells/Suarez spot in the Baltimore rotation comes up again next week.

He spent 2023 with the KBO's Samsung Lions, where he put up a 3.92 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 108 innings, and he will presumably add to the Orioles' minor-league depth at Triple-A Norfolk.
